Duke is 5-7 in NCAA Tournament action over the last seven years, including Thursday's win over Richmond. In eight consecutive appearances, the Blue Devils have made one trip to the final four in 1999, when it lost to conference foe Virginia in the semifinal round. With the win versus Richmond, Duke now holds a recrod of 5-2 record when hosting the first round contest with the two losses coming in the past two seasons. The Blue Devils have never won two games in the national tourney, as the 1997-1999 championships placed just eight teams in the bracket, making it possible to advance to the final four after winning one game.
This is the third meeting between the two teams in the 2005 campaign, with each team taking one win. North Carolina defeated Duke, 12-11, on March 12, but the Blue Devils fired back with an 11-9 win in the ACC semifinals on April 29. Duke leads the all-time series 8-7, winning four of the last five games against the Tar Heels since 2003. The neighboring schools have never met in NCAA Tournament action.
After the two-year absence from the NCAA Tournament, North Carolina returned with a vengeance, knocking off seventh-seeded Penn State, 7-6, in triple overtime. In the Tar Heels' last tourney appearance, they advanced to the 2002 final four to make their third showing (1997, 1998) in the national semifinals. Led by Head Coach Jenny Levy, Carolina is 6-6 all-time in the tournament.
