DURHAM, N.C. - The 12th-ranked Duke women's tennis team recovered quickly from its first Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) road loss in 16 years as the Blue Devils cruised by Virginia, 7-0, at the Ambler Tennis Stadium on Saturday. With the win, Duke improved its record to 13-6 overall, 3-2 in the ACC while Virginia fell to 5-11, 1-5 in the ACC.
Duke started out hot, as it swept the doubles matches to gain the first point. Lauren Archer and Clelia Deltour swiftly dispatched Caroline Hammond and Lindsey Pereira 8-1 at No. 3, followed by Saras Arasu and Tory Zawacki's 8-6 win over Dora Bechliwanis and Kristen James at the second position to clinch the point for the Blue Devils. Kristin Cargill and Jackie Carleton closed out the doubles play with an 8-4 win over Rachel DelPriore and Douglas Wink at No. 1.
"It's been a while since we just came out and beat somebody," said Duke Head Coach Jamie Ashworth. "We just came out on top and were able to stay on top."
Duke's hot hand continued into singles, as Nos. 1-5 all won in straight sets. Arasu started things off with a 6-2, 6-2 win over DelPriore in the third slot to move her within three victories of claiming 100 for her career. Cargill followed that up by defeating Bechliwanis 6-1, 6-1 on the fifth court to keep her ACC record perfect at 6-0.
Deltour and Carleton kept the momentum going by winning at Nos. 2 and 4, respectively, and then in the top position 39th-ranked Katie Blaszak triumphed over James 6-1, 6-3 to snap a personal losing streak of four matches. The closest and last victory of the match came in at No. 6, as Archer won a hard fought victory over Pereira 6-5, 4-6, 10-4 to complete the sweep.
The Blue Devils will next host Maryland at 12:00 p.m. on April 10. It will mark senior day for both Arasu and Blaszak as the duo will be playing in their final home regular season match of their career. Each will be recognized prior to the match.
