DURHAM, N.C. - For the first time since 1985, Duke will finish the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) season with at least three losses, as the 12th-ranked Blue Devils fell to 61st-ranked Maryland, 4-3, on Sunday at Ambler Tennis Stadium. The loss dropped Duke to 13-7 overall, 4-3 in the ACC while Maryland's record rose to 8-10, 2-5 in the ACC.
"We just couldn't close on singles," said Duke Head Coach Jamie Ashworth. "As soon as it got close, we started getting too tense." The loss was Duke's first against Maryland under Ashworth, a Terrapin alumnus. His record against his alma mater fell to 10-1.
In doubles play, Duke took the first match at No. 1 as the duo of Kristin Cargill and Tory Zawacki defeated Marianne Baker and Julia Graca, 8-2. Maryland countered, however, as Tamar Huppes and Neda Mihneva beat Katie Blaszak and Jackie Carleton in the second position, 8-5, to knot the doubles score. The Terps then grabbed the first point of the match with a tightly contested victory at No. 3 as Ramona But and Masha Senic knocked off Lauren Archer and Clelia Deltour, 9-8 (8-3).
Needing to win four of the next six matches, the Blue Devils started singles play strong, claiming four of the first six sets. That momentum wouldn't last as the 44th-ranked Blaszak quickly fell to the 60th-ranked But, 3-6, 2-6, in the top slot. Duke claimed the next two matches as Zawacki and senior Saras Arasu, honored along with Blaszak prior to the match for senior day, won their contests at the sixth and third positions in straight sets to tie the match at 2-2. Arasu won her 98th career match, moving her within two victories of claiming 100 in her four-year career.
Cargill then fell at No. 5 to Veronika Subertova, 6-2, 1-6, 3-6, as Maryland regained the lead. The loss was the sophomore's first in ACC action dropping her to 12-1 in her two years at Duke. Finally, in an intense back-and-forth contest at the two spot between Carleton and Baker, the Terp overcame deficits of 5-2 and 5-1 to wear down the Blue Devil, 7-5, 7-6 (7-4), clinching the match for Maryland. With the teams' outcome already decided, Deltour defeated Mihneva 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 to end the match at the fourth position.
The loss marks the first time since 1985, and second time overall, that Duke has lost three ACC matches in one season. The 1985 campaign was also the only other year that Maryland defeated the Blue Devils. The Terrapin victory also snaps a 24-match losing streak to Duke.
Duke will next travel eight miles down Tobacco Road to face the archrival Tar Heels of North Carolina at 5:00 p.m. on April 13 in Chapel Hill.
