WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - For the first time since 1989, the 12th-ranked Duke women's tennis team lost an away Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) match as the Blue Devils fell, 6-1, at 36th-ranked Wake Forest on Wednesday in Winston-Salem, N.C. The loss broke a streak of 56 straight league wins on the road and it marks the first time under the direction of Head Coach Jamie Ashworth the Blue Devils have lost a road ACC contest in his nine years.
"We lost the doubles point and we never recovered mentally or emotionally," said Ashworth. "We are not a talented enough team to just show up and win a match. We cannot afford to do that."
Duke began the match losing the doubles point as the Blue Devils fell at both No. 1 and No. 3. Duke's Kristin Cargill and Tory Zawacki lost, 8-2, to 17th-ranked Karin Coetzee and Alex Hirsch at the top slot, while Clelia Deltour and Lauren Archer lost, 9-7, to Danielle Schwartz and Blakely Offutt at No. 3. The lone win came at the second position as Jackie Carleton and Katie Blaszak downed Katie Martzolf and Ashlee Davis, 8-6.
In singles play, Duke was only able to notch one victory as Cargill defeated Schwartz, 7-6, 6-2, but that was after the match had been clinched by Wake Forest. The victory for Cargill was her fourth straight in singles play and improves the Atlanta, Ga., native to 19-8, 5-0 in the ACC. Falling in singles for Duke were 111th-ranked Carleton, 44th-ranke Blaszak, Saras Arasu, Deltour and Zawacki.
Duke now falls to 12-6 overall, 3-2 in the ACC. The two losses in the ACC marks the first time since 1987 the Blue Devils have suffered more than one loss in league action. In 1987, Duke finished with a 5-2 record.
The Blue Devils will next host Virginia and Maryland at 12:00 p.m. on April 9 and 10, respectively.
