WASHINGTON, D.C. - Junior Katie Chrest and senior Caline McHenry have been named nominees for the 2005 Tewaaraton Trophy, as announced by the Tewaaraton Award Foundation Friday. The power-packing duo is part of a list of women that was narrowed down to 18 from which five athletes will be chosen as the finalists for the award. The trophy will be awarded to the best female collegiate lacrosse player in the nation on June 2 at the National Geographic Society in Washington, D.C.
Chrest leads the second-ranked Blue Devils in goals (44), assists (14) and points (58) through 13 games of the 2005 season after leading the team in the same categories each of the last two seasons. The Hampstead, Md. native tied the school record for a goals in a game with a 6-tally performance against William & Mary on March 4 before scoring a game-high five goals against then-No. 2 Virginia to lead Duke to the 16-12 win. A member of the IFWLA World Cup Training Team and U.S. Developmental Team, Chrest has started all 50 games of her collegiate career and sits in fourth place on the career record charts for goals with 126.
The team leader in caused turnovers, McHenry has forced 26 through the first 13 games of the year for a 2.0 per game average. The Reisterstown, Md., native is one of eight Blue Devils to start every contest this season, leading to 14 draw controls and 24 ground balls to rank fourth on the team in each category. McHenry tallied a career-high five caused turnovers against third-ranked Georgetown on March 19 to go with four ground balls and a draw control.
Chrest, McHenry and the Blue Devils take on Loyola Saturday at noon in Koskinen Stadium prior to the No. 2 men's game against third-ranked Virginia at 3 p.m.
