DURHAM, N.C. - Duke's Monique Currie earned her first All-America honor on Wednesday as the junior guard was named one of 10 players selected to the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) All-America team.
Along with Currie, Seimone Augustus (LSU), Jessica Davenport (Ohio State), Sandora Irvin (TCU), Tiffany Jackson (Texas), Tameka Johnson (LSU), Janel McCarville (Minnesota), Kendra Wecker (Kansas State), Tanisha Wright (Penn State) and Sophia Young (Baylor) were named to the team.
LSU's Augustus was named National Player of the Year and LSU Head Coach Pokey Chatman earned National Coach of the Year, while Stanford's Candice Wiggins and Georgia's Tasha Humphrey were named Co-National Freshmen of the Year.
A native of Washington, D.C., Currie has led the fifth-ranked Blue Devils to a 28-4 overall record in a year where Duke lost three starters and other key bench personnel. Currie, the 2005 ACC Player of the Year, has averaged 17.6 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 2.2 steals and hit 33.8 percent from three-point land. Currie is the only player in the ACC to rank in the top-15 in scoring, rebounding, assists and steals.
On the season, Currie has scored 20 or more points 12 times, scored double-figures in 31 of 32 games and collected six double-doubles. In the ACC stats, she ranks fourth in scoring (17.6), seventh in rebounding (7.0), 15th in assists (3.34), 13th in free throw percentage (77.4), eighth in steals (2.16), 15th in assist/turnover ratio (1.13) and fourth in defensive rebounds (4.97). Currie has been a clutch performer for the Blue Devils on the season hitting the game-winning shots against Tennessee, N.C. State and Maryland.
It marks the fifth straight year Duke has registered a player on the USBWA All-America team as Alana Beard earned the honor in 2002, 2003 and 2004, while Georgia Schweitzer was selected in 2001. Earlier this week, Currie was named Kodak Region II All-America and is now one of 48 finalists for the 12-member Kodak All-America team.
The Blue Devils received a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament and will play at 12:12 p.m. on Sunday, March 20 against 15th-seeded Canisius at the Dean E. Smith Center in Chapel Hill, N.C. Boston College and Houston will play immediately following the conclusion of the Duke contest.
