Vince Oghobaase, a member of the Duke football program who enrolled at the school this past January, has been named a finalist for the Watkins Award, an honor presented annually by the National Alliance of African American Athletes to the nation's top male African American high school scholar-athlete.
The Watkins Award ceremony will be held at the historic Adams Mark Hotel in Charlotte, N.C., on Saturday evening. The five finalists for the honor include Oghobaase (Houston, Texas), Robert Kibble (Houston, Texas), Mohamed Massaquoi (Charlotte, N.C.), Shawn Oatis (Chino, Calif.) and Ekom Udofia (Scottsdale, Ariz.). The finalists were selected based on their unweighted grade point average, personal statements, extra curricular activities, community service and letters of recommendation.
"The 2005 Watkins Award features another year of fine student athletes," said Everette Pearsall, Executive Director of The Alliance. "Each of these young men is well equipped for success academically. We have continued to recognize and honor the premier African American Scholar Athletes in the United States."
Oghobaase, a 6-6, 335-pound defensive tackle who graduated from Hastings High School last fall with a 3.96 grade point average, joined the Blue Devil football program last month. An All-America choice by Prep Star magazine and the seventh-ranked defensive tackle in the nation by Scout.com, Oghobaase recorded 68 tackles with 12 sacks and three fumble recoveries as a senior en route to earning first team all-state honors.
