DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - Duke was up just five on the worst team in the Atlantic
Coast Conference with about 8 minutes left in a game that was anything but
pretty. Then Clemson went cold and the Blue Devils' inside muscle proved to be too
much for the slumping Tigers. Jessica Foley scored 21 points and No. 3 Duke extended Clemson's losing
streak to 11 with a 72-48 victory Thursday night. "It was a strange game, a tough game, without much of a flow," Duke coach
Gail Goestenkors said. "We've worked hard to get the ball inside, and we did
that." Wanisha Smith had 10 of her 12 points in the second half and Mistie Williams
also scored 12 points for Duke (24-2, 10-1), which has won eight straight
against Clemson. Monique Currie added 10 points. "I don't think the scoring necessarily turns over to me if Monique Currie's
not on," Foley said. "We're still trying to pound the ball inside." Foley scored nine in the first half and Duke took a 33-24 lead into the
break. After Clemson narrowed the lead to 50-45 with 7:57 to play on a
3-pointer by Tasha Phillips, Duke held the Tigers without a basket. Clemson coach Jim Davis wasn't feeling well before the game, battling a
fever and nausea. "I'd take pneumonia right now if it meant we could get a win," Davis said. Chante Black grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds to help Duke dominate the
boards 48-31. Phillips was 4-for-9 from 3-point range and ended up with 18 points for
Clemson (7-17, 1-10). Reggie Maddox chipped in 12. Duke pounded the ball inside throughout the second half and for the game
outscored Clemson 40-4 in the paint. The Blue Devils shot 48.2 percent from the
field. "That's bordering on the ridiculous," Davis said. "We're soft, lazy - all
the things you don't want to be described as being." Clemson made just 28.6 percent (8-for-28) in the second half. Smith scored six unanswered points in a 20-2 run in the closing minutes that
blew open the game for Duke. The Tigers went 0-for-7 from the field and made just three of five free
throws in the game's final 7:40. "We just stopped competing and got soft inside again," Davis said. "You
just can't do that against a team of this caliber and expect to win. They're
short on numbers, but they've got quality, quality players." Injuries and illnesses have limited Duke to eight active players. "It just seemed we came out onto the court without any real emotion,"
Goestenkors said. "I thought the crowd did a great job trying to pick us up in
the second half." The Blue Devils managed just two baskets on their first 11 possessions in a
physical first half. Clemson had more fouls (11) than points (9) midway through
the first half. Phillips and Maddox both hit 3s in the last 2:39 before the break. That
helped Clemson close the half with a 12-7 run.![]()
