Durham, N.C. - Four Duke tennis players were listed among the top-30 in the Mideast Region when the Intercollegiate Tennis Association released the first set of regional rankings on Friday. The list included two Blue Devils in the top four in singles with Ludovic Walter earning the top spot and Jonathan Stokke ranked in the fourth position. Duke also had two doubles teams ranked in the top-15.
Walter, a senior from Vannes, France, wrapped up the fall season with a singles record of 9-4. He earned an at-large bid in the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships and defeated four ranked players before losing in the championship match to No. 3 Ben Kohlloeffel. Two of the players he defeated were ranked in the top-10. He also advanced to the quarterfinals of the Mideast Regional Championships. His nine wins moved him into seventh on the all-time singles wins list at Duke with 104. He is 15 wins shy of tying current assistant coach, Ramsey Smith, for the school record.
Stokke, a senior from Chapel Hill, N.C., recorded a record of 14-6 in singles play this fall. He earned a trip to the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships after winning five matches in the Mideast Regional Championships to earn a share of the title with Radford's Martin Sayer. Stokke lost his first match in the Indoor Championships but rallied to win three straight before losing in the consolation finals to the top player in the country, Ryler DeHeart of Illinois. Stokke also advanced to the quarterfinals of the Southern Intercollegiate Championships with two wins before losing to No. 4 John Isner of Georgia.
Peter Rodrigues and Joey Atas were also ranked in the fall regional rankings. Rodrigues, a senior from Estoril, Portugal, earned a spot at No. 19 after posting a record of 4-5 in the fall. He won two matches at both the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational and the Mideast Regional Championships. Atas, a junior transfer from Ohio State, wrapped up the rankings in a tie for 30th. He recorded a record of 2-4 in singles action.
The Blue Devils had two doubles teams ranked in the region. Atas and Stokke teamed up to compile a record of 11-3 and earn the No. 3 doubles ranking. They won four matches at the Southern Intercollegiates to win the championship. They won five matches at the Mideast Regionals to advance to the finals before losing, 8-3 to Virginia's Cohen and Rizza. Walter and Rodrigues finished the fall season with a 5-2 record to receive the No. 7 ranking. They won two qualifying matches at the All-American Tennis Championships and won three matches to advance to the quarterfinals of the Mideast Regional Championships.
Duke will open the spring season at the Hidden Dual Tournament in Miami, Fla. The tournament runs January 13-15. The Blue Devils will play their first dual match of the season on January 29 when they host Old Dominion at 6 p.m.
