In addition to earning First Team Freshman All-America recognition, Duke linebacker Michael Brown has been honored as the ACC's Defensive Freshman of the Year by The Sporting News, announced on Monday by the national publication. Rookie quarterback Zack Asack received Honorable Mention Freshman All-America honors while Brown and teammate Cameron Goldberg earned spots on the publication's Freshman All-ACC team.
Brown, a 5-11, 225-pound native of Houston, Texas., led the Blue Devils in tackles with 92 while compiling 10.0 tackles for loss, three caused fumbles and one quarterback sack. He logged three double digit tackle games including a season-high 15 total stops against Wake Forest along with a 14-tackle, 3.0-tackle for loss performance against North Carolina in the final week of the year. Brown also earned First Team Freshman All-America honors from Scout.com and was a second team pick by Rivals.com.
Asack, a 6-4, 190-pound native of Westwood, Mass., started six games under center for Duke in 2005 and finished the year by completing 90-of-180 (.500) pass attempts for 966 yards with five touchdown and eight interceptions. He also rushed for an additional 147 yards and two touchdowns. Asack's top performance came in week 10 at Clemson when he hit on 26-of-43 tosses for 328 yards and one touchdown.
Goldberg, a 6-6, 270-pound offensive tackle from Lutherville, Md., saw action in 10 games for Duke and earned the first starting assignment of his career in the season finale at North Carolina.
