J.J. Redick scored 30 points to reach double figures for the 96th time in his career including all 10 games this season ... he now has scored in double figures in 40 straight contests and 47 of 49 dating back to the 2003-04 season ... Redick has now scored 20 or more points six times this season, including three straight, and in 48 career games, pushing Duke's record to 42-6 in those contests (6-0 this year) ... Redick has reached the 30-point plateau three times this year, including two straight, and nine times in his career. Duke is 8-1 when Redick scores 30 and 3-0 this season.
Redick's 30 points tonight combined with his 41 against Texas on Dec. 10 gives him 71 in his last two games and he becomes the sixth player in Duke history to combine for 70 or more in back-to-back games. Danny Ferry (91; 58 at Miami, 12/10/88 and 33 vs. Wake Forest, 12/21/88) holds the school record and is the most-recent player to accomplish the feat. Dick Groat and Bob Verga both acomplished the feat twice as it marks the ninth time in school history it has happened ... Redick also became the third player to score 30 points after recording a 40-point game in his previous outing ... Ferry (above) and Jeff Mullins (43 vs. Villanova, 3/13/64 and 30 vs. UConn, 3/14/64) also accomplished the feat
With his 30 points, Redick pushes his career total to 2,059 and he remains in eighth place on the Duke chart. He is just 10 points behind Gene Banks (1978-81) and Jason Williams (2000-02), who both scored 2,079 in their Duke careers
Redick hit 5-of-9 shots behind the arc, giving him 355 in his career. He moves into second place on the ACC career chart past Dennis Scott (Georgia Tech, 351). He also moved past Terrence Woods from Florida A&M on the NCAA chart and is currently in 12th place in NCAA history. On the NCAA list, he needs eight more to catch Jeff Fryer from Loyola Marymount in 11th place and Curtis Staples from Virginia holds the ACC and NCAA record with 413 career triples
Freshman Greg Paulus set a new Duke freshman record with 15 assists, a mark that is also the second-most in school history. Bobby Hurley holds the school record with 16 against Florida State on Feb. 24, 1993. Hurley also recorded 15 assist three times. In terms of freshmen, Chris Duhon, Jason Williams (twice) and Hurley (twice) combined for five games with 13 assists. Duhon's 13-assist game came against N.C. A&T on Dec. 30, 2000. Paulus also became just the seventh freshman to record double-figures in assists on a list that includes the three players mentioned above and Jim Spanarkel, Gene Banks and Tommy Amaker
Lee Melchionni recorded a career-high 18 points off of 4-of-7 shooting from the field, including 2-of-4 from long distance, and 8-of-9 from the line. Melchionni's previous career high was 16 four times, including against Davidson on Nov. 19 earlier this season
Shelden Williams picked up 19 points and 11 rebounds to record his third double-double of the season and 41st of his career, pushing Duke's record to 35-6 when he records a double-double ... Williams remains in 28th place on Duke's career scoring chart with 1,441 points, 15 away from Chris Carrawell and Vince Taylor with 1,455. He also remains in seventh place on Duke's rebounding chart with 960 career boards as Gene Banks is sixth on the list with 985 ... Williams' two blocked shots gives him 320 in his career and he remains in second on Duke's list and eighth on the ACC chart.
Sean Dockery scored 14 points marking the third time this season he has reached double figures and 10th in his career. Duke is a perfect 10-0 when Dockery scores 10 or more points in his career. Dockery also recorded four steals in the game, pushing his total to 17 in the past four games and giving him a team-leading 22 on the season. He now has 155 careeer steals
Duke improves to 3-0 in the all-time series with Valparaiso and 4-0 against teams from the Mid-Continent Conference ... each of the school's three meetings have come in the past three seasons.
Duke scored a season-high 104 points against Valpo, marking the first 100-point game since a 102-92 victory over Wake Forest on Feb. 20, 2005 ... Duke's 53 first half points marks the Duke high for any half this season
