DURHAM, N.C. ? The 2005 NSCAA/adidas Women's Soccer Division I All-America team has been released with Duke's Carolyn Ford earning second team accolades, after guiding Duke to a 14-6-1 overall record and a trip to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Ford, a senior from Bethesda, Md., led a Blue Devil defense which posted an Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC)-best 13 goals allowed and was second in goals against average (0.60). Duke finished the season with tied for the fewest goals allowed and lowest goals against average in school history, a mark previously set back in 1988 when the Blue Devils allowed 13 goals and posted a 0.74 GAA in their inaugural season.
“We are thrilled for Carolyn,” said Duke Head Coach Robbie Church. “We think this is a great honor for her and our program. It tops off the senior year and excellent career she had at Duke. She was our leader on and off the field, while being named ACC Defensive Player of the Year. It is an honor that is very well-deserved.”
The center back led Duke to 11 shutouts on the year, while posting two goals and three assists. She finished her career with 22 assists, which ranks third on the Blue Devil charts, and guided the Duke defense to a total of 39 shutouts over her four years. Ford was also named ACC Defensive Player of the Year and first team All-ACC in 2005.
The NSCAA/adidas honor for Ford marks the first time a Blue Devil women's soccer player has earned NSCAA/adidas All-America since 1999 when Sherrill Kester was named to the third team.
Duke also held its end of the season banquet and handed out five awards. Ford took home the Most Valuable Player (MVP) and Defensive MVP awards, while senior Kate Seibert received the Most Inspirational award, Seibert and junior Darby Kroyer shared the Offensive MVP, while freshman Kelly Hathorn earned Rookie of the Year honors. All awards were voted on by the Duke team.
The NSCAA All-Southeast Region team was released on Monday with four Blue Devils earning honors. Ford was selected to the first team, sophomore goalkeeper Allison Lipsher and junior midfielder Rebecca Moros were on the second team, while Kroyer earned third team accolades. The honors for Ford and Moros marks the second straight year the duo have been selected All-Region.
The Blue Devils will return seven starters in 2006 including five of their top six scorers and Lipsher in goal for Church.
