Duke junior cornerback John Talley has been named First Team All-ACC by the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association, the Associated Press announced on Monday evening.
Talley, a native of Duncan, S.C., finished the year with 50 tackles, five interceptions and eight pass breakups. His interception total ranks tied for first in the league and tied for seventh nationally while his passes defended total (13) is second best in the conference. Talley was a second team all-league selection in 2004 after compiling 59 tackles, four interceptions and 14 PBUs.
“We're certainly very excited for John,” said Duke head coach Ted Roof. “To earn first team all-league honors in what is arguably the best football conference in the nation is quite an accomplishment. John has worked hard and deserves this recognition.”
With 11 career interceptions, Talley is the ACC's active leader and will enter the 2006 campaign tied for the most career picks in the country with Utah's Eric Weddle. On Duke's career charts, he ranks second in interception return yards (245), fifth in interceptions (11) and sixth in pass breakups (25). In 2005, Talley became just the third Blue Devil to lead the team in interceptions three straight years, joining Mike Diminick (1986-88) and Alex Green (2001-03), and could become the first player in Duke history to pace the squad for four consecutive seasons.
Talley becomes the first Duke defensive back to receive first team all-conference accolades since Ray Farmer received back-to-back citations in 1994 and 1995.
Miami led all schools with 12 total selections as the Hurricanes had four first team honorees, one second team choice and seven honorable mention picks. Virginia Tech had 10 total selections including a league-best five players on the first team. Oddly enough, Atlantic Division champion Florida State was the only school without a first team choice as the Seminoles landed four players on the second unit and three honorable mention picks.
