Durham, N.C. - The Duke women's lacrosse team officially announced its 2006 schedule on Tuesday which features games against six of the other seven teams in the 2005 elite eight and the other three teams in the final four.
The Blue Devil's will play eight games at home this season. They will play their first game at home on Saturday, Feb. 25 in the conference opener against Maryland at 12 p.m. The home schedule is highlighted by games against Georgetown, Virginia and Northwestern, who were all in the elite eight a season ago. Duke will face Georgetown on Saturday, March 18.
“At Duke, we are accustomed to playing one of nation's most competitive schedules,” said Head Coach Kerstin Kimel. “The 2006 season will be no different and this is something we are extremely proud of. Our players are excited and enthusiastically preparing for the challenges that come with facing programs of this caliber week after week. We feel the rigor of our conference and regular season schedule is critical to preparing for success in the post-season. We certainly feel that our 2006 schedule will afford us the opportunities to do this.”
In the second of four straight games at home, the Blue Devils square off with Virginia on Saturday, April 1. The Cavaliers narrowly defeated them in the final four last season, 15-13. This coming after Duke won in the regular season and ACC Tournament against them. In their next game, Duke will host the defending national champions, Northwester, at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 7. After two games at home, the Blue Devils will make the eight mile trip to Chapel Hill on Wednesday, March 8 to face North Carolina. Duke ousted the Tar Heels, 15-7, in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament last season and beat them in the ACC Tournament after losing at home in the regular season. The ACC Tournament will take place Apr. 27-30 in Baltimore, Md.
“The ACC will be incredibly competitive as always and I expect our ACC Tournament at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore to be even more exciting than last season,” said Kimel. “In addition, our non-conference schedule is packed with our traditional top-10 rivals: Princeton, Georgetown, Vanderbilt, Notre Dame, Northwestern and Dartmouth.”
The schedule will also include eight games away from Durham. Four of the teams they will play on the road are teams that participated in the NCAA Tournament last year. The Blue Devils will begin the regular season on Tuesday, Feb. 14. when they head to Farmville, Va. to face Longwood. They will then travel to Richmond, Va. for a game against the Spiders on Sunday, Feb. 19. Duke defeated Richmond, 16-4, in the opening round of last year's tournament. The next game will be at Princeton on Sunday, March 12. The final big test of the regular season will come after the ACC Tournament when Duke heads north to Hanover, N.H. to face Dartmouth, the team that lost in the final four to Northwestern. The NCAA Tournament will be May 13-28 with the final four scheduled to take place in Boston, Mass.
“We are excited to add Longwood and St. Joseph's to our schedule for the first time in our program's history,” said Kimel.
The Blue Devils will once again be led by Katie Chrest and Megan Huether. Chrest, a senior attacker from Hampstead, Md., is coming off a tremendous season in which she was given the Tewaaraton Trophy as the National Player of the Year. She was also named Attacker of the Year by IWLCA/US and Inside Lacrosse as well as a first team All-America. She was the ACC Player of the Year and ACC Tournament MVP as well as a selection on the all-conference team and all-tournament team in the ACC. Chrest finished the season fourth in the country with 4.52 points per game (96 overall) and tied for sixth with 3.33 goals per game (70 overall). She started all 21 games in goal for the Blue Devils and finished the year ninth in the nation with a 7.72 goals against average and tied for fifth with a .560 save percentage.
