CHAPEL HILL, N.C.- For the ninth straight year, the top-ranked Duke women's golf team brought home the team title at the Lady Tar Heel Invitational on Sunday as the Blue Devils won by 21 strokes at the 6,285-yard, Par 72 Finley Golf Course. Also on the day, Duke Head Coach Dan Brooks tied the NCAA Division I record for most coaching victories with the 91st of his 22 years with the Blue Devils.
After playing steady the last two days dealing with rainy conditions, the Blue Devils closed out the tournament with an unbelievable 18-hole total of 279, which was nine-under-par. For the tournament, Duke closed with a 54-hole total of 861 with Auburn (882), Vanderbilt (893), Wake Forest (896), Virginia (900), Texas A&M (904), Ohio State (905), N.C. State (915), South Carolina (921) and Florida State (921) rounding out the top 10.
Brooks is now one win shy of holding the Division I record for most career victories all to himself as he is currently tied for Mark Gale, who coached at San Jose State from 1978-1996. Over the last eight years, Brooks has led the Blue Devils to three national titles, 65 event titles, seven ACC titles, three NCAA individual champions and 34 individual medalist honors.
For the second straight day, Duke freshman Jennie Lee lead the Blue Devil charge as she finished with a team-best four-under-par round of 68 on Sunday and concluded the tournament with a three-day total of 217 to finish seventh. Lee, a product of Huntington Beach, Calif., struggled on day one with an 80, but came back the next two days to post rounds of 69, 68 to close out the weekend.
On Sunday, Lee started on hole two and kicked off the morning on fire collecting three straight birdies to open play. She then posted four consecutive pars before notching bogeys on holes nine, 10 and 11. Lee settled back down to collect a par on the par-three 12th hole and then rattled off four straight birdies to move to four-under-par for the tournament. Lee closed out with three pars and turned in a team-best seven birdies on the day.
Junior Anna Grzebien continued her stellar play with a three-under-par, 69, on Sunday to finish second in the individual competition with a 214. Grzebien, the 2005 NCAA Individual Champion and product of Narragansett, R.I., finished the day with four birdies to only one bogey and posted her second straight top-10 finish to start the season.
After winning her first collegiate tournament, freshman Amanda Blumenherst posted a one-under-par, 71, on Sunday to finish tied for third with a 54-hole total of 215. A native of Scottsdale, Ariz., Blumenherst had a solid performance on Sunday carding one birdie on the par-four 10th and 17 pars.
Firing the best round of the her season on Sunday was senior Liz Janangelo with a one-under-par, 71. Janangelo, from West Hartford, Conn., made steady improvement each day in Chapel Hill notching rounds of 73, 72, 71 to finish with a 216, which was tied for fifth. She finished the day with five birdies and for the weekend tied for the tournament best with 13 total birdies along with Lee and Texas A&M's Ashley Knoll, who won the individual title with a 10-under-par, 206.
“I played well today,” said Janangelo. “I actually chipped in on my last whole, which was like a pitch in. It was a good way to end the tournament.”
After struggling the first two days with rounds of 79, 77, sophomore Jennifer Pandolfi finished the action on Sunday with a season-best round of 72. For the tournament, the Navarre, Fla., native finished tied for 28th with a 228. Pandolfi collected two birdies to go along with two pars on the day.
Overall, in the Lady Tar Heel, Duke has registered the team title 10 times over its 28 years (1988, ?97, ?98, ?99, 2000, ?01, ?02, ?03, ?04 and ?05). Eight different Blue Devils have won the individual title over the 29 years- Mary Anne Widman (1983), Sarah LeBrun (1986), Christine Casingal (1988), Jenny Chuasiriporn (1997), Candy Hannemann (1998), Candy Hannemann and Leigh Anne Hardin (2000), Kristina Engstrom (2001), Liz Janangelo (2002) and both Janangelo and Hardin (2003).
Duke will next travel to Palo Alto, Calif., for the Stanford Pepsi Women's Intercollegiate on Oct. 21-23.
