STANFORD, CALIF.- After traveling across the United States to compete in the Stanford Pepsi Intercollegiate, the top-ranked Duke Women's Golf team opened play on Friday with a one-under-par round of 283 and lead by six strokes at the 6,025-yard, Par 71 Stanford Golf Course in Palo Alto, Calif.
The Blue Devils carded the only under-par team score for the day, while rounding out the top-10 is UCLA (289), UNLV (292), USC (293), Pepperdine (295), Oregon State (295), California (296), Washington (296), Arizona (298) and Texas A&M (300).
"I am very happy with today's round," said Duke Head Coach Dan Brooks. "But the thing is it isn't over as there are very good teams out here. I am not content as we have two more days to compete."
Four Blue Devils registered even or under par rounds on the day led by freshman Amanda Blumenherst, who posted a one-under-par total of 70 as she shot 35 on each nine holes. A product of Scottsdale, Ariz., Blumenherst has now collected seven even or under par rounds in seven career collegiate outings. She is tied for third along with Duke senior Liz Janangelo and three other golfers.
"Amanda is doing great, but really both freshmen are doing well," said Brooks. "Jennie shot two rounds in the 60s to close out the Lady Tar Heel and was solid today also. I am real proud of Jennifer as she worked really hard last week and has turned in two straight rounds of 72."
A native of West Hartford, Conn., Janangelo had her best round of the fall with a one-under-par total of 70. She made the turn with a 34, but a bogey on No. 17 dropped the 2004 National Player of the Year to a one-under-par ledger.
"I am excited to have Liz back to where she belongs; at or near the top," said Brooks. "She had a bogey on 17 as she finished but she is playing good goal and the way we are accustomed to her playing."
Turning in another stellar round was junior Anna Grzebien, who finished with a 71 and is tied for eighth along with Ashley Knoll of Texas A&M. Grzebien, from Narragansett, R.I., also made the turn with a 34, but finished the final nine holes with a 37.
Notching her second straight round of 72, sophomore Jennifer Pandolfi is tied for 10th after day one. Pandolfi posted a 35 after the first nine holes and finished off with a 37 to earn a 72 on the day. Freshman Jennie Lee is tied for 38th with a 75 as she scored a 38 on the front nine and 37 on the back.
Brooks is now two rounds away from becoming the all-time winningest coach in Division I women's golf history He is currently tied with Mark Gale, who coached at San Jose State from 1978-1996, with 91 career wins at Duke over his 22 years. Over the last eight years, Brooks has led the Blue Devils to three national titles, 65 event titles, seven ACC titles, three NCAA individual champions and 34 individual medalist honors.
Duke has won both tournaments it has played in this season by a combined 24 strokes. Tee times will begin at 10:30 a.m. (EST) on Saturday with 36 holes remaining to be played.
