Upcoming Event: Women's Golf versus Sea Best Intercollegiate on January 26, 2026

10/22/2005 12:00:00 AM | Women's Golf
STANFORD, CALIF.- For the second straight day, the top-ranked Duke Women's Golf team shot an under-par round on Saturday as the Blue Devils carded a four-under-par, 280, and leads by 13 strokes at the Stanford Pepsi Intercollegiate, which is being played at the 6,025-yard, Par 71 Stanford Golf Course in Palo Alto, Calif.
The Blue Devils own a two-day total of 563, which is five-under-par, with Southern California (576), UCLA (578), Pepperdine (581), UNLV (582), Washington (589), Vanderbilt (591), Stanford (596), Arizona State (596), Oregon State (597) and Arizona (597) rounding out the top-10. This tournament owns one of the top fields the Blue Devils will play in this season with eight teams in the top 20 and five in the top-10.
“In all honesty, we didn't make that many putts today,” said Duke Head Coach Dan Brooks. “I heard a lot of frustration with putts not dropping. I think if we get some balls to start dropping we can go even lower. This is a good course, it is not particularly hard and you can score on it. The greens are a good pace and not outrageously fast. Players can go low on this course.”
Brooks is now one round away from becoming the all-time winningest coach in Division I women's golf history He is currently tied with Mark Gale, who coached at San Jose State from 1978-1996, with 91 career wins at Duke over his 22 years. Over the last eight years, Brooks has led the Blue Devils to three national titles, 65 event titles, seven ACC titles, three NCAA individual champions and 34 individual medalist honors.
For the second straight day, senior Liz Janangelo carded an under-par round as she registered a season-best 67 on Saturday now holds a one-stroke lead in the individual action. Janangelo, a West Hartford, Conn., product, has a two-day total of 137 after her round of 70 on Friday. She is in search of her first tournament victory since the Bryan National Collegiate in the spring of 2004. Over her career at Duke, Janangelo has won six tournaments, which ranks tied for third on the all-time list.
“Liz has made some adjustments and has been working very hard,” said Brooks. “She addressed a couple of things and it is starting to pay off. I knew that if she did those things, waited for it to pay off and be patient, she would get back to the Liz we all know.”
In tied for sixth is freshman Amanda Blumenherst, who notched a 71 on Saturday and owns a 36-hole total of 141, which is one-under-par. She has now collected eight straight rounds of even or under par to start her career. Junior Anna Grzebien is tied for 10th with a 142 after finishing with her second straight score of 71, while freshman Jennie Lee is tied for 21st after firing an even-par 71 on day two. Lee heads into the final day of action with a total of 146.
After posting her second straight round of 72 on Friday, sophomore Jennifer Pandolfi finished with an 82 on Saturday and is tied for 62nd.
“We had some good summers, Liz is getting back to the way she played as a sophomore and we are getting some good play from the freshmen,” commented Brooks on the excellent play of everyone to start the season. “I am really pleased to see Anna playing the way she is because she spent most of the summer getting her wrist back in shape.”
Duke has won both tournaments it has played in this season by a combined 24 strokes. Tee times will begin at 10:30 a.m. (EST) on Sunday with 18 holes remaining to be played.
