CHAPEL HILL, N.C.?In search of its ninth straight Lady Tar Heel Invitational title, the top-ranked Duke women's golf team got off to an excellent start on Friday at the 6,285-yard, Par 72 Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C. with a six-over-par, 294. The Blue Devils lead by six shots over Vanderbilt, Auburn and Virginia with 36 holes remaining.
Duke turned in a 294 with Vanderbilt (300), Auburn (300), Virginia (300), Wake Forest (302), N.C. State (305), Texas A&M (305), Texas (307), Ohio State (309) and Tulsa (312) rounding out the top 10.
The Blue Devils were led by junior Anna Grzebien, who posted a two-under-par score of 70 on Friday and is tied for the individual lead along with Leah Wigger of Virginia. Grzebien, a native of Narragansett, R.I., began her day with birdies on holes No. 2 and No. 9 to make the turn at two-under-par. Grzebien, the 2004 NCAA Individual Champion, had a bogey on hole 11 but bounced back to birdie holes 14 and 17 to reach three-under-par for the day before finishing with a bogey on No. 18.
After winning her first collegiate tournament at the Mason Rudolph Collegiate Championship two weeks ago, freshman Amanda Blumenherst carded an even-par round of 72 on Friday and is tied for seventh. A product of Scottsdale, Ariz., Blumenherst posted bogey's on holes six, eight and 11 to begin the day, but settled down to turn in birdies on No. 13, 14 and 17 to close out the round.
Senior Liz Janangelo had the best start of the day for the Blue Devils with birdies on her first two holes, had a bogey on No. 5, but came back with another birdie three holes later to remain at two-under-par. A product of West Hartford, Conn., Janangelo then suffered a double-bogey on the par-four ninth hole to finish off her first eight holes at even par. Janangelo went on to post bogeys on holes 13 and 16 but finished the final three holes at one-under-par. She enters Saturday tied for 11th, individually.
Sophomore Jennifer Pandolfi and freshman Jennie Lee finished the day with rounds of 79 and 80, respectively. Pandolfi is tied for 39th, while Lee is 50th.
Duke will tee off at 9:30 a.m. on holes one, two and three along with Vanderbilt and Auburn.
