Duke and Florida State met for the 14th time this afternoon. With today's victory, Florida State leads the all-time series, 14-0, vs. the Blue Devils, including a 5-0 mark in games played in Durham.
Junior CB John Talley intercepted his fifth pass of the season ? the most by an ACC player so far this season ? and the 11th of his career in the second quarter today. His 11 career picks rank fourth on Duke's all-time list. Immediately ahead are three Blue Devils with 13 career interceptions.
Sophomore RB Justin Boyle ran for his sixth and seventh touchdowns of the season (nine in his career). It was Boyle's third multiple-touchdown game of the season (others were at East Carolina and vs. VMI). His 42 points this season lead the Blue Devils. He entered the game tied for fourth in the ACC with five touchdowns.
Senior P Chris Sprague has punted 54 times this season, 14 of which have been downed inside the opponents' 20-yard line (vs. no touchbacks).
Sophomore S Chris Davis had three kickoff returns for 91 yards today. The 91 yards were the most by Davis in a game this season. He averaged 25.8 per kick return on 20 returns as a freshman a year ago.
Sophomore RB Ronnie Drummer continued making the big play for Duke. He now has rushes of 50 yards or more in each of the last three games. He had an 81-yard TD run at Miami, a 50-yard run vs. Georgia Tech and a 55-yarder in the third quarter vs. Florida State today. Drummer, who entered the game sixth in the ACC in kickoff return average (21.6), also returned two kickoffs for 90 yards.
Freshman RB Requan Boyette ran for a career-high 123 yards on 10 carries this afternoon. His 78-yard TD run in the fourth quarter tied for the 10th-longest in school history. With his 123 yards rushing, Boyette became the fifth Duke player under Ted Roof to run for 100 or more yards in a game (Chris Douglas, Cedric Dargan, Justin Boyle and Ronnie Drummer were the others).
Duke netted 191 team rushing yards today. Florida State entered the game ranked second in the ACC by allowing 93.2 yards per game. Through its first six games, the Seminoles allowed just five rushing touchdowns. Duke scored three times on the ground this afternoon.
Duke's 24 points were its second-most of the season, trailing only its 40 vs. VMI on Sept. 17. The scoring output was also the second-most by Duke in the Florida State series. Duke scored 27 vs. Florida State in 1997.
Freshman K Joe Surgan nailed a career-long 47-yard field goal with 8:32 remaining in the game.
Freshman LB Michael Brown ended the day with 12 tackles. His season highs prior to today were eight-tackle performances vs. Navy and Georgia Tech. Brown also registered a tackle for loss for the fourth consecutive game.
Duke returns to action next Saturday at Wallace Wade Stadium with a game vs. Wake Forest. Kickoff is set for 12:00 PM ET.
