NORFOLK, VA. ? Senior Nicole Dudek scored the first two goals for the No. 3 Duke field hockey team Sunday to lead the Blue Devils to a 3-2 win over No. 8 Old Dominion, successfully avenging an earlier 2005 loss and snapping an eight-game win streak by the Monarchs. Duke improved to 12-3 on the season as head coach Beth Bozman became the fastest field hockey coach in school history to reach 50 wins.
“We did what we needed to do,” said Bozman. “I thought this was an incredibly hard fought game and an important game as we head toward the end of the season. Old Dominion made the job very difficult for us. They are a very good team, and I think when it comes down to it, you'll see them higher than No. 8.”
Dudek opened scoring 10 seconds before the four-minute mark on a fast break pass from senior Kirsten Bostrom, a defender who registered her first assist of the year and the second of her career. Old Dominion knotted the score nine minutes later on a penalty corner, but Dudek again put the Blue Devils up a goal at 25:40, turning an intercepted pass into a point for Duke.
Freshman Laura Suchoski gave the Blue Devils a two-goal advantage 7:16 into the second half. Old Dominion's Nicolien van Nispen answered two minutes later, but the Monarchs would not score again for the rest of the game, securing Duke's 12th victory this season and sixth against a team ranked at the time of play.
Both teams fought hard throughout the game. The Blue Devils gained a slight advantage in shots, finding 14 opportunities to Old Dominion's 12, while the Monarchs held a 5-4 edge in penalty corners. Senior Christy Morgan collected seven saves on Old Dominion's 12 shots, and the Monarchs' Mary Cate Gordon registered eight stops.
Next weekend will be Duke's first since the beginning of the season without any field hockey games. The Blue Devils return to action with their final 2005 home contest Oct. 28 at 3 p.m. vs. Northwestern.
