DURHAM, N.C. - The eight-ranked Duke women's tennis team opened the 2005 spring season on Sunday with a 4-3 victory over 18th-ranked Tennessee (0-2) at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center in Durham, N.C. The Blue Devils (1-0) won their season opener for the sixth straight year.
"Anytime you beat a team in the top-20 is good," said Duke Head Coach Jamie Ashworth. "Knowing Tennessee has played some matches and we haven't is something we can build on. Hopefully, we can use this match and the Indiana match next week to prepare us for the National Team Indoors in February."
Duke kicked off the doubles action by cruising to an 8-2 victory at the No. 1 slot as the 42nd-ranked tandem of Jackie Carleton and Katie Blaszak defeated 50th-ranked Sabita Maharaj and Vicki Jones. Tennessee's duo of Blakeley Griffith and Bryce Marable came back to win 8-3 after being down 2-1 early against Tory Zawacki and Saras Arasu at the third position. The Blue Devil team of Kristin Cargill and Jennifer Zika were able to notch an 8-4 win over Melissa Schaub and Ghizela Schutte at the second slot to clinch the doubles point for Duke.
In her dual match debut, freshman Clelia Deltour of Duke notched a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Schutte at the sixth slot to give the Blue Devils a 2-0 advantage. Deltour, a product of Savigny sur Orge, France, improves to 13-4 on the season. An Atlanta, Ga., native, Cargill put the Blue Devils up 3-0 with a 6-3, 7-5 victory at the fifth position over Schaub. Cargill cruised in the first set before she faced a 5-4 deficit in the second set. She responded by winning the next three games to win the match in straight sets.
"Kristin has been working hard and she took advantage of the situation she was put in today," said Ashworth.
Tennessee was able to get on the board next with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at the top slot as 50th-ranked Maharaj downed 56th-ranked Carleton of Duke to make the score 3-1. The Lady Vols cut the lead to 3-2 with a 7-5, 6-3 win at the third position by Griffith over Zika.
Duke was able to clinch the match at the second position as 115th-ranked Blaszak battled for a 7-6, 6-4 win over Marable. Blaszak, a product of Fairfax, Va., won a very tough first set which ended up being one of the key turning points of the match. Tennessee claimed the final point of the match at the fourth slot as 107th-ranked Jones knocked off Zawacki, 7-6, 6-2.
The Blue Devils will next host Indiana on Saturday, Jan. 29 at 12:00 p.m. in the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center.
