DURHAM, N.C. - In its second dual match of the season, the eighth-ranked Duke women's tennis team improved to 2-0 on Saturday with a 5-2 victory over 29th-ranked Indiana (2-1) at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center in Durham, N.C. The Blue Devils have now won the past 10 straight matches against Indiana.
In doubles action, the Blue Devils jumped out to quick lead at the third position as Clelia Deltour and Parker Goyer defeated Dominika Walterova and Kara Zeder, 8-3. At the first slot, Duke's Kristin Cargill and Jennifer Zika knocked off Sarah Batty and Laura McGaffigan, 8-4. The Blue Devil duo of Katie Blaszak and Saras Arasu jumped out to a 5-2 lead early, but Indiana's tandem of Dora Vastag and Brianna Williams came back to even the match, 7-7. The Blue Devils ended up pulling out a tiebreaking victory of 7-4 to win all three doubles matches.
Heading into singles action, Duke led 1-0 with its victory in doubles.
The Blue Devils carried the momentum of winning the doubles point over to singles and quickly won on court four with a 6-0, 6-0 victory by Duke's Deltour over Williams. Deltour, a freshman from Savigny sur Orge, France, improves to 2-0 in dual match action this season and 14-4 overall. Duke increased the score to 3-0 with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 6 by Cargill over Cecile Perton. Cargill also improves to 2-0 in dual match action this season and owns an 8-5 overall singles ledger.
Playing at the No. 1 position on Saturday for the first time this season, Blaszak notched a 6-2, 6-3 win over 91st-ranked Vastag. A product of Fairfax, Va., Blaszak is listed 115th in the lastest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings.
Duke clinched the match with a 7-6, 6-1 at the fifth slot as 96th-ranked Arasu defeated Walterova. At the second position, Batty of Indiana downed Duke's Tory Zawacki, 4-6, in the first set, but Zawacki rebounded to win the second set, 6-1. With the match already clinched, they played a tiebreaker for the third set and Batty won 10-5 to win the match and give Indiana its first point of the day.
The Hoosiers were able to end the match with another victory as McGaffigan upset 108th-ranked Zika, 6-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-7) at the third slot.
Duke will next travel to the National Team Indoor Championship on Feb. 3-6 in Madison, Wis. The Blue Devils won the championship in 2003, but did not compete last season.
