DURHAM, N.C. - For the sixth year in a row, the 18th-ranked Duke women's soccer team won its home opener at Koskinen Stadium as the Blue Devils picked up a 5-0 win over Elon (1-1) on Sunday evening. On a night where the Blue Devils (1-1) dominated the offensive action for 90 minutes, Duke was able to rebound from a heartbreaking, 4-3, loss at Tennessee on Sunday by scoring five goals and outshooting Elon, 25-1. "I thought it was extremely important for us to come back tonight and play well," said Duke Head Coach Robbie Church. "I was impressed with how we came out tonight. We passed the ball well and had some good looks. We just have to score goals and tonight scoring five goals was good for our confidence going into this weekend." Freshman Lorraine Quinn started off the goal-scoring action for the Blue Devils just seven minutes into the match as the Farmingdale, N.Y., product connected from 23 yards out off an assist from junior Kate Seibert. The goal for Quinn was her first in a college uniform, after scoring 38 goals during her high school career. Just 10 minutes later, Duke went ahead 2-0 as junior Carolyn Ford took a free kick and placed it perfectly to Seibert. A Downingtown, Pa., native, Seibert headed the ball to sophomore Sarah McCabe who beat Elon goalkeeper Kara Zagol for her fifth career goal. The Blue Devils held a 13-0 shot advantage and a 2-0 lead at halftime. Duke came out firing in the second half scoring three more goals by sophomore Darby Kroyer, sophomore Lauren Tippets and McCabe added her second of the contest. All three goals came in a matter of eight minutes. McCabe, from Sarasota, Fla., collected her first two-goal performance of her career on the evening. Senior Kate Straka started in goal for the Blue Devils and played 64:20 in net without facing a shot, while junior Alexis Morant finished the contest in goal Duke. Zagol finished the match with seven saves in 90 minutes for Elon. All five goals scored by the Blue Devils on the evening were from either freshmen or sophomores. The Blue Devils will next travel to Chapel Hill, N.C., for the Nike Carolina Classic on Sept. 3, 5. Duke will face the reigning NCAA Division Champion, Kennesaw State on Sept. 3 at 5:00 p.m., and then face 12th-ranked Florida on Sept. 5 at 1:00 p.m.
