CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The 18th-ranked Duke women's soccer team collected a goal in the 32nd minute of action to register a 1-0 victory over Kennesaw State on the first day of action at the Nike Carolina Classic in Chapel Hill, N.C. Duke improves to 2-1 on the season, while Kennesaw State falls to 2-1 and is only their second loss over the last three years. The Owls are the defending NCAA Division II National Champions and are in their first year of play in Division I. "It was a tough game and Kennesaw State is a good team," said Duke Head Coach Robbie Church. "We played some good soccer and I thought we had some nice combinations. We are going to score some goals as it is early in the season." The Blue Devils kicked off the match with plenty of chances early with seven shots over the first 25 minutes of action before freshman Lorraine Quinn found senior Casey McCluskey for the only goal of the contest. McCluskey, a native of Springfield, Va., notched her first goal of the season and 25th career goal to move her into sole possesion of fourth place on Duke's all-time goals scored list. For the first half, Duke dominated the action up front posting an 11-2 shot advantage. The Blue Devils continued to control the ball in the second half but couldn't get anything to drop, outshooting the Owls, 8-3. Kennesaw State had one final chance with 30 seconds remaining, but Blue Devil goalkeeper, Allison Lipsher, stopped the scoring opportunity. Lipsher, a freshman from Honolulu, Hawaii, picked up her first collegiate win in goal as she collected three saves on the afternoon. Duke's defense registered its second straight shutout of the season. Junior All-America Kate Seibert did not play in the contest and is questionable for the next game due to a pulled quad muscle. Up next for the Blue Devils will be 10th-ranked Florida (2-0) on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. on the final day of the Nike Carolina Classic. "On Sunday against Florida, who is a top-15 ranked team, we will be challenged and I am excited to see where we are at this point in the season." - d - u - k - e -
