Duke Lands 369 On ACC Academic Honor Roll

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The 48th annual Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Honor Roll, noting academic excellence by student-athletes for the 2003-04 school year, contains a record 1,810 performers as announced today by Commissioner John Swofford.
The Honor Roll is comprised of those student-athletes who participated in a varsity-level sport and registered a grade point average of 3.0 or better for the full academic year. Duke led the conference in total selections for the 17th straight year, placing 369 student-athletes on the list, while North Carolina was second with 244. Virginia was third with 224 and Maryland was fourth with 203, followed by Clemson (195), NC State (178), Florida State (174), Georgia Tech (112) and Wake Forest (111).
Featured on this year's Honor Roll are several student-athletes that were National Players of the Year, including Florida State softball player Jessica van der Linden, who led the Seminoles to the Women's College World Series. Wake Forest field hockey player Kelly Doton helped lead the Demon Deacons to their second-consecutive NCAA Championship en route to being named National Player of the Year, while North Carolina's Shalane Flanagan repeated her title of National Cross Country Runner of the Year.
Also included on the list of top student-athletes are Marvin Lewis, who helped lead Georgia Tech to the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship game, Virginia wrestler Scott Moore who held the top national ranking for six-consecutive weeks at the 141-pound weight class and Virginia women's lacrosse player Andrea Pfeiffer, who was named the Most Valuable Player of the NCAA Championship, having led the Cavaliers to the national title.
Duke men's basketball player Nick Horvath, Georgia Tech football player William Hardy and NC State cross country runner Megan Coombs each became five-time ACC Academic Honor Roll selections. Clemson's women's basketball player Kanetra Queen and Maryland field hockey player Sara Silvetti were both four-time ACC Honor Roll members and 2004 ACC Weaver-James-Corrigan Scholarship recipients.
