In its final regular season game of 2004, the Duke women's lacrosse team posted a 7-6 decision over Hofstra on Saturday afternoon at James M. Shuart Stadium in Hampstead, N.Y. With the win, the Blue Devils improved to 13-5 and await the NCAA selection show tomorrow afternoon. Hofstra's season ends with a record of 8-8.
Duke got off to a hot start in the first half as they tallied five of the first six goals in the half to open a 5-1 lead with 27:40 left before the Pride answered with two goals in the final three minutes of the half, cutting the deficit to two at half, 5-3.
Sophomore Katie Chrest got Duke on the board first with a goal at the 27:40 mark, before the Pride tied it up less than a minute later with Catherine Guerriere's first tally of the contest.
The Blue Devils responded with four straight goals over the next 15 minutes, including two from freshman Kristen Waagbo, to open a 5-1 lead with 5:59 left before intermission. Freshman Michelle Menser and senior Corinne Broesler also had goals during the Duke rally.
Becky Thorn would bring Hofstra back within two with her two first half goals in the final 2:37 of the half. Her first of the game, a free position goal, came with 2:37 remaining and Thorn added one more off a assist from Tara Buecker with just one second left.
Hofstra would tie the score with two goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half as Caitlin Connolly scored her first of the game at the 6:18 mark before adding another a little over three minutes later. With 19:10 left in the second half, the Pride would take its first lead of the contest as Thorn notched her third goal of the game off another assist from Buecker.
Trailing by one, the Blue Devils responded with back-to-back goals at the 13:45 mark and the 18:57 to regain the lead, 7-6. Junior Kristy Dirks scored the first in the run off an assist from Chrest and senior Meghan Miller gave Duke the advantage back with the game-winner at the 18:57 mark. Neither team was able to find the back of the net over the final 11-plus minutes of the game as the two goalies combined to make 12 saves in the second half.
Waagbo and Chrest each finished with two points for the Blue Devils, and freshman Meghan Ferguson finished with a team-high four ground balls for Duke. Sophomore Megan Huether notched two caused turnovers and saved nine shots in goal for the Blue Devils.
The win gives Duke 13 victories in 2004, tied for the second most in program history, and also marks the 100th career victory for head coach Kerstin Kimel. Kimel has compiled a 100-68 record in 10 years as a head coach, including a 96-60 mark in nine seasons in charge of the Blue Devils.
