The Duke University women's lacrosse team had its season come to a close with a 13-12 overtime loss to Georgetown on Thursday, May 13, in an NCAA Tournament Opening Round game at Koskinen Stadium. The Hoyas' Catherine Elbe picked up a loose ball in front of the cage and netted the game-winner with just seven seconds remaining in the second session of the first overtime.
The Blue Devils rallied from a four-goal deficit late in the second half to take a 12-11 lead, but the Hoyas countered with the last two goals to advance to play Maryland in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Terrapins topped Temple, 22-4, in their opening round match.
Duke got on the board first when Kristy Dirks scored off a Kristen Waagbo pass with 1:46 gone by in the contest. Georgetown countered with goals from Anouk Peters at 8:16 and 9:56 to take a 2-1 advantage, but Leigh Jester quickly tied the score, 2-2, at the 10:52 mark.
Just 10 seconds after Duke tied the game, Gloria Lozano netted an unassisted goal for the Hoyas. Dirks collected her second goal of the game at 12:10, with Katie Chrest earning an assist on the play, for the third tie of the day.
Georgetown took control of the half over the next seven minutes, recording three straight goals. Peters, Elbe and Lauren Redler scored goals during the Hoya rally, while Sarah Oliphant registered a pair of assists. Duke got an unassisted goal from Stefanie Sparks at 24:03 and Dirks added her third goal of the half at 26:08 to close the gap to 6-5. With just under two minutes remaining in the half, Allison Chambers put the Hoyas back up by two with her 25th goal of the season.
Elbe added another goal 3:20 into the second half for the Hoyas, but Duke's Chrest countered by scoring eight seconds later. Georgetown tacked on goals from Oliphant and Lozano to take a 10-6 lead with 15:08 remaining in the game.
Chrest started and ended a four-goal rally for the Blue Devils with her 42nd and 43rd goals of the season. In between Chrest's outburst, Jester and senior Meghan Miller scored unassisted goals for Duke. Georgetown regained the lead, 11-10, at the 49:25 mark when Lozano scored off a free position shot for her third goal of the day.
Jester complete her hat trick just under two minutes later off a free position shot to tie the contest for the fifth time. Duke reclaimed the lead at 52:28 when freshman Michelle Menser flipped a Corinne Broesler pass by the Georgetown goalie for a 12-11 advantage.
Oliphant forced the sixth tie of the day with her 31st goal of the season with 3:17 remaining in the contest. Duke had a shot to win the game in regulation but Chrest's shot from just inside the eight-meter mark struck the right post and bounced out of goal.
In the first three-minute session, Georgetown gained possession and held the ball until taking a shot with 11 seconds remaining. Duke goalie Megan Huether recorded a save and cleared the ball to send the game into the second three-minute stanza of the first overtime.
Duke won the ensuing draw control and Broesler nearly ended the contest less than a minute later, but her shot from just outside the crease was first blocked by Georgetown goalie Sarah Robinson and then skipped wide of the goal after bouncing off the lower portion of the left pipe.
After a Blue Devil turnover created by Robinson, Georgetown went on the attack with 1:45 remaining in the overtime session. With just over 10 seconds remaining, an errant Hoya pass bounced to Elbe on the left side of the field just inside the eight-meter circle. After picking up the loose ball, Elbe worked her way to the middle of the field and slipped a shot into the upper right corner of the goal with seven seconds remaining. Georgetown won the ensuing draw control to seal the victory.
Huether stopped nine shots for Duke, while Robinson collected eight saves for the Hoyas. Georgetown, ranked sixth in the IWLCA poll, improved to 12-4 on the year, while No. 7 Duke closes the season with a 13-6 record.
Chrest paced the Blue Devils with three goals and an assist to finished the year with 43 goals and 11 assists. Her goal total is tied for the the third-highest in Duke history, while her 54 points matches her freshman total from a year ago. Jester and Dirks also had hat tricks for Duke.
Georgetown got three goals and an assist from Elbe and two goals and two assists from Oliphant. Peters and Lozano also had three goals apiece for the Hoyas.
