The Duke University women's lacrosse team fell to 7-4 on the season with a 10-8 loss to No. 5 Loyola on Friday afternoon at Diane Geppi-Aikens Field. Loyola improved to 12-1 with the win.
The Greyhounds started off scoring when Rachel Shuck hit sophomore Sydney Greene at the eight-meter 3:31 into the contest. Duke then went on a three goal run for a 3-1 lead 14:40 into the contest. Kristen Waagbo had two goals while Leigh Jester had one in the Blue Devils run.
Jen Schuerholz pulled Loyola within one at 22:22 with her unassisted goal. Shuck evened out the score at 3-3 less than 40 seconds later when Greene passed off her free-position shot to
Shuck who was sitting right in front of the cage. Kourtney Porcella gave the Greyhounds a 4-3 halftime lead after Loyola made a defensive play and Porcella went coast to coast beating her defender to the cage 25:53 into the game.
Duke's Katie Chrest went on to tie things up at four with an unassisted goal just over a minute into the second half. Stephanie Walker then scored back to back goals for the Greyhounds, with one at 33:03 and another at 36:34 for the lead, 6-4.
The Blue Devils took their second lead of the game, 7-6, by scoring three consecutive goals in a two minute span. Meghan Miller, Chrest and Michelle Menser each netted goals during the rally.
Loyola countered by scoring four straight goals for a 10-7 margin. Shuck assisted on the first two, one by Kristi Korow and the other from Greene to tie the school record. Jaclyn Borrone added a free-position at 49:45 and the eventual game-winner. Schuerholz added the finally tally for the Greyhounds for a 10-7 score. Meghan Walters did her best to give Duke some momentum with a goal at 56:50 but Loyola held the ball for most of the remaining three minutes to seal the win at 10-8.
Shuck led the game with a goal and three assists while Greene added two goals and an assists. Schuerholz and Walker both had two goals. Waagbo led Duke with two goals and an assist while Chrest had two goals as well.
The Loyola goal keepers stopped seven shots in goal Friday. Starter Kim Lawton made two in the first half and Cindy Nicolaus stopped five in the second. Duke's Megan Huether made 11 saves in the cage.
The Blue Devils are also in action on Sunday, April 11 with a 2:00 p.m. road contest against Richmond.
