DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke University women's lacrosse team claimed the program's first ACC regular season title with a 10-9 win over No. 5 Virginia on Saturday at Koskinen Stadium. Junior Kristy Dirks netted four goals and sophomore Katie Chrest added three goals and three assists as the Blue Devils improved to 7-3 overall and 3-0 in conference play. Virginia falls to 9-3 overall and 2-1 in the ACC.
Duke jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the opening 14:12 of the contest. Dirks started the run with her first goal 1:19 into the contest with Chrest earning an assist on the play. Just under four minutes later, Chrest assisted on Kristen Waagbo goal for a 2-0 Blue Devil lead.
Freshman Leigh Jester added an unassisted goal at 8:58 and Dirks again scored off a Chrest pass at 14:12 to cap the rally with Duke leading 4-0. Chrest's three first half assists give her six assists for the season.
Virginia broke through at the 21:40 mark with an unassisted goal by Morgan Thalenberg and trimmed the deficit to 4-2 just 25 seconds later as Ashleigh Haas netted her 11th goal of the season.
The Blue Devils responded with two more goals just before halftime to take a 6-2 lead. Dirks netted her third goal of the half at 26:41 with Jester registering an assist and senior Corinne Broesler collected her 13th goal of the season with just 56 seconds remaining in the half.
Duke scored the first two goals of the second half for the team's second 4-0 run of the day. Chrest scored at 36:42 and Dirks recorded her fourth goal of the day at 39:25 to give the Blue Devils an 8-2 advantage.
The Cavaliers tallied back-to-back goals as Nikki Lieb collected an unassisted goal at 41:52 and Amy Appelt added a free position goal at 43:26 to cut the lead to 8-4.
Chrest had the answer for the Blue Devils, scoring off a Kristen Waagbo pass at the 45:38 mark. After Tyler Leachman scored off a free position shot for Virginia, the Chrest-Waagbo combo hooked up for another goal. Chrest now leads the Blue Devils with 24 goals this season, while Waagbo has a team-high 13 assists.
With 10 minutes remaining and Duke holding a 10-5 lead, Appelt erupted for three straight goals. The junior attack scored an unassisted goal at 50:09 and then added free position goals at 55:08 and 56:16. Leachman added a goal with one second left, but it wasn't enough as Duke came away with the 10-9 victory.
The Blue Devil defense came up big in the contest holding the high-scoring Virginia attack five goals below its season average. Sophomore goalie Megan Huether registered five saves, while freshman Meghan Ferguson held Appelt in check for nearly 50 minutes. Appelt entered the contest with 50 goals on the season, including a seven-goal effort in a win over James Madison on Wednesday.
Duke returns to action on Friday, April 9 when it travels to Baltimore, Md. for a contest with No. 4 Loyola. Gametime is set for 4:00 p.m.
