Blue Devils Fall To Virginia In ACC Women's Lacrosse Championship Game

Second-seeded Virginia defeated top-seeded Duke, 17-7, to win the 2004 ACC Women's Lacrosse Championship on Sunday at Henry Stadium on the campus of the University of North Carolina. Katie Chrest, Leigh Jester, Meghan Miller and Meghan Walters each earned All-Tournament honors for the Blue Devils.
Within the first minute of the game, the score was tied 1-1 on unassisted goals by Duke senior midfielder Meghan Miller and Virginia senior attacker Caitlin Banks, respectively.
With 23:23 remaining the half, Duke's Miller scored her second goal of the game to put the Blue Devils on top 2-1. Less than a minute later, Duke senior attacker Corinne Broesler made the score 3-1 on an assist from junior defender Stefanie Sparks.
The Cavaliers surged back to take a 7-3 lead on six straight goals. Morgan Thalenberg made the score 3-2 on her goal off Amy Appelt's assist. Ashleigh Haas then scored two consecutive goals to put Virginia on top 4-3. She was assisted by Banks on her first score. Banks extended the Cavalier lead to 5-3 on her second goal of the game. Tyler Leachman then increased the Cavaliers' lead to 6-3 on her first goal of the game. Haas was credited with the assist on the play. With just over five minutes remaining in the half, Virginia junior midfielder Courtney Young made the score 7-3 on her 18th goal of the season.
Duke cut into Virginia's lead (8-4) when Chrest scored on a feed from Broesler with 4:10 left in the half. The Cavaliers answered Chrest's goal with two goals of their own to make the score 10-4. Appelt recorded her 71st goal of the season to put Virginia ahead 9-4, before Banks converted on a pass from Haas to bring the score to 10-4.
With two seconds remaining in the half, Duke freshman attacker Kristen Waagbo scored her first goal of the game to cut Virginia's lead to 10-5 at the half. She was assisted by Chrest on the play.
Virginia extended its lead to 14-5 in the second half. Appelt opened the second-half scoring on two unassisted goals. Young pushed the Cavaliers' lead to 13-5 on her second goal of the game. She was assisted on the play by Appelt. Leachman notched her second goal of the contest to make the score 14-5. Banks, who assisted her on the play, recorded her second assist of the game.
Chrest scored her second goal of the game with 8:37 remaining in the game to cut the Virginia lead to 14-6. Appelt recorded her fourth and fifth goals of the game to extend the Virginia lead to 16-6 with 1:16 left to play. Chrest recorded a goal with 56 seconds left in the game to make the score 16-7. Virginia's Leachman scored her third goal of the game with five seconds remaining. The Cavaliers would go on to win 17-7.
