The 12-member 2004 All-ACC Women's Lacrosse Team was announced today with Duke's Megan Huether, Meghan Miller and Meghan Walters each making the team. In addition to the three all-conference selections, Kerstin Kimel was also named the ACC Coach of the Year.
The Blue Devils, ranked seventh in the latest IWLCA poll, enter this weekend's ACC Championship as the top-seed after going 3-0 in conference play this season. Duke is 10-4 overall with six wins against teams ranked in the top-20 of the IWLCA poll. The 10-win season marks the seventh consecutive 10+ win season for the Blue Devils.
Kimel's selection as this year's ACC Coach of the Year marks the third time in her career she has won the award. She owns a career record of 97-67, including a 93-59 record while at Duke. Kimel also won the Coach of the Year award in 1998 and 2000.
Huether, Miller and Walters have each had outstanding campaigns in 2004. Huether, a sophomore goalie, leads the ACC in saves per game (9.37), ranks second in save percentage (.550) and goals against average (8.07), while also ranking fifth in ground balls per game (2.57).
Walters leads the ACC in draw controls per game (2.79) and caused turnovers per game (1.50). The senior defender has also stepped up her play on the offensive end, collecting 17 goals including a six goals effort in a win over Richmond on April 11. Miller, a senior midfielder, ranks fifth in the conference in caused turnovers (1.36 ctpg.) and is one of the team's vocal leaders on offense and defense.
Virginia's Amy Appelt becomes the second Virginia player to be named ACC Player of the Year and first since 1998. Appelt is currently leading the nation in scoring with 83 points and scored a hat trick in the first 13 games of the 2004 season. Maryland's Mollie Reese was named this year's ACC Freshman of the Year. The midfielder notched eight goals and two assists for ten points on the season.
