AUBURN, ALA. - After an eight-day break for the Christmas holiday, the second-ranked Duke women's basketball team cruised to an 89-63 victory over Rhode Island (2-8) on the first day of the Auburn Holiday Classic at the Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum in Auburn, Ala.
Duke (12-1) won its 10th straight overall contest and 20th consecutive game in the month of December.
The Blue Devils jumped out to a 47-25 lead in the first half led by National Player of the Year candidate Monique Currie with 10 points, five rebounds and five steals in 11 minutes of play. She finished the contest with 14 points, six rebounds and five steals.
Duke's defense wasn't what it usually is as the Blue Devils allowed Rhode Island to shoot 44.1 percent from the field, which is a season-best for a Duke opponent. Overall, the Blue Devils were led by Jessica Foley who scored 14 of her 16 points in the first half and hit 6-of-10 from the field.
Mistie Williams added 14 points and five boards and Duke's bench produced 30 points on the afternoon.
Duke will next face Auburn on Friday, Dec. 31 on the final day of the Auburn Holiday Classic. The game will tip at 4:00 p.m. (EST).![]()
