The Series With Ball State...
This will mark the first meeting between Ball State and Duke.
The Injury Report...
Sophomore Caitlin Howe did not play in the Jacksonville State contest on Wednesday, due to a sore knee. She did not play against Purdue due to a coaches decision. In her first two collegiate contests, freshman Chante Black has had two injuries, but has come back to play in the last two games. Against Davidson she suffered 11 stitches in her forehead and then against South Florida she turned her right ankle. The ankle injury forced her to miss the Notre Dame and Penn State contests.
The Last Time Out...
Monique Currie had 22 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists to lead No. 3 Duke to a 66-48 victory over No. 20 Purdue on Saturday in the Boilermaker Blockbuster. Wanisha Smith added 12 points and Mistie Williams had a career-high 14 rebounds for the Blue Devils (10-1), who extended their winning streak to eight games.
Erin Lawless scored 17 points and Katie Gearlds had 16 for Purdue (6-3), which shot a season-low 28 percent from the field and went through two scoring droughts. After whittling a 13-point Duke lead down to two in the second half, the Boilermakers went the next 8:31 without a field goal.
Currie and the Blue Devils outscored Purdue 17-2 in that span. Currie had eight points during the run, including a three-point play off an acrobatic layup that got Duke rolling. The Boilermakers missed 13 straight shots, spanning 9:40 from the end of the first half and beginning of the second, to squander a lead. Duke outscored Purdue 19-0 during the drought to turn a six-point deficit into a 34-21 lead with 16 minutes left.
Lawless responded with eight points during a 16-5 run that Sharika Webb capped with a three-pointer to cut Duke's lead to 41-39. That was the best Purdue could do as Duke's scrappy defense showed up and the Boilermakers' anemic offense reappeared. Lawless and Gearlds combined to go 12-of-32 from the field, but the rest of their teammates went 5-for-29.
In a ragged first half, Duke shot 28 percent and Purdue 25 percent. Both teams went through scoring droughts of more than five minutes in the period. Duke closed with a 10-0 run to take a 25-21 lead at the break. Gearlds scored 11 first-half points, including three three-pointers, to keep Purdue close.
Currie Nears Triple-Double...
Junior Monique Currie missed a triple-double on Saturday against 18th-ranked Purdue by three assists as she finished with 22 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists. The seven assists was a season-high for the National Player of the Year candidate.
Rebounding Advantage...
After getting outrebounded in two of the first four contests, Duke has responded by outrebounding its opponents the last seven games in a row. On the season, the Blue Devils are outrebounding opponents by a 10.5 clip.
Williams Picks Up Career-High... Even though she took only six shots from the field against 18th-ranked Purdue, junior Mistie Williams made her presence felt on the boards pulling down a career-high 14 rebounds.
On The Eight-Game Winning Streak...
Duke has won its last eight straight games and here are some highlights during the stretch--
• Held opponents to 26.8 percent shooting from the field
• Outrebounding opponents by 11.1
• Holding opponents to 44.6 points per game, while Duke is averaging 75.8
• Monique Currie is averaging 19.0 points, 7.4 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 2.5 steals
• Won games by an average margin of 31.1 points
Duke Visits RCA Dome...
During the trip to Indianapolis, Ind. over the weekend, the Blue Devils visited the RCA Dome, which hosts the 2005 NCAA Final Four on April 3 & 5. The team was able to stand where center court will be and see where they are hoping to play in April. The last time Duke made a trip to the site of the Final Four during the season was in 2003 in Atlanta. The Blue Devils ended up advancing to the Final Four that season.
Duke Against Ranked Opponents...
Over the last five years, Duke owns a 34-10 record against ranked opponents. So far this season, the Blue Devils have defeated 16th-ranked Kansas State, 63-51, 23rd-ranked Penn State, 66-58, fourth-ranked Tennessee, 59-57 and 18th-ranked Purdue, 66-48, but lost 76-65 at 11th-ranked Notre Dame.
Laura Kurz Coming On Strong...
After admitting that she was a walking turnover in her first collegiate game, freshman Laura Kurz has made huge progress over the first two months of the season. Over the first seven games of her collegiate career, Kurz averaged 2.1 points, 1.9 rebounds, 0.6 assists and 0.3 steals. Over the last four games, she has averaged 13.0 points, 3.0 rebounds, 1.5 steals and 1.0 assists. In those games, Kurz has hit 6-of-13 from downtown and 22-of-33 (66.7 percent) from the field.
She collected a career-high 20 points against Pacific, then scored 10 against Liberty and then notched 13 points on Wednesday versus Jacksonville State. She hit 4-of-4 field goals and scored nine points against Purdue on Saturday. Kurz looks like a totally different player on the court as she looks confident and has been one of the best shooters on the squad. On the season, Kurz is averaging 6.1 points, 2.3 rebounds and is hitting 58.3 percent from the field.
