Junior Shelden Williams registered a game-best 32 points and 12 rebounds to lead Duke to a convincing 107-56 victory over St. Francis Xavier (Canada) in an exhibition contest at Cameron Indoor Stadium Nov. 5. The Blue Devils opened the game on a 9-0 run in two-and-a-half minutes and never led by less than double figures after the 17:08 mark in the first half.
Williams combined with junior Shavlik Randolph, who added 22 points, to dominate the post all night. The duo combined to shoot 23-of-26 from the floor, grab 17 rebounds and block six shots (all by Williams). Duke, which shot .603 from the floor, enjoyed a 66-30 margin in points in the paint and controlled the boards by a 45-23 count.
Duke dominated the game from the start, disrupting St. Francis Xavier's offense and scoring easy baskets on its own end. The X-Men did not reach double figures until a layup by Neil MacDonald with 8:00 left in the first half made the score 38-11. The Blue Devils led 51-28 at halftime.
After trading baskets early in the second half, Duke began to build on its margin about halfway through the second frame. Duke went up by 30 (76-46) on a Randolph free throw with 10:34 remaining and never led by less than that margin the rest of the way, largely because of a blistering shooting percentage of .719. Junior walk-on Ross Perkins scored the game's final basket on a backdoor lay-up with 22 seconds left. The final margin of 51 points was Duke's largest lead of the game.
In addition to Williams and Randolph, Duke was paced by J.J. Redick's 18 points, Daniel Ewing's 16 and Lee Melchionni's 10 off the bench. Eight Blue Devils played 10 or more minutes in the game, including a team-high 35 by Ewing, who ran the point for Duke most of the night.
Gary Gallimore and Michael Baxter each had a team-best 12 points for the X-Men, who continue their tour of the U.S. with games against Davidson and Georgia this week.
The Blue Devils return to action on Nov. 11 in their final exhibition game vs. N.C. Central. Tip-off is set for 7:00 PM at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Duke opens the regular season - the 100th in the history of basketball at the school - on Nov. 20 vs. Tennessee-Martin at home.
