CARY, N.C. - The 11th-ranked Duke women's soccer team kicked off its 2004 ACC Tournament in shutout style on Wednesday as the Blue Devils registered a 3-0 victory over 18th-ranked Wake Forest to advance to the semifinals for the third straight year at the SAS Soccer Complex in Cary, N.C.
Duke, who is seeded fourth in the tournament, will next take on top-ranked and top-seeded North Carolina on Friday at 7:30 p.m. UNC defeated Maryland, 1-0, in double-overtime on Wednesday to advance.
"We came out really strong and played well early, but didn't get anything out of it until Casey was able to get the first goal at the end of the first half," said Duke Head Coach Robbie Church. "It was a solid overall performance by the entire team."
The Blue Devils came out looking for its shot early in the match with seven attempts and three corner kicks over the first 35 minutes of action. Then, Duke got on the board at the 41:34 mark as junior Carolyn Ford sent a long feed to senior Casey McCluskey and she was able to got loose on a breakaway. A native of Springfield, Va., McCluskey then beat Wake Forest goalkeeper Heather Currie, hitting the right corner of the net for her 16th goal of the season.
"Casey's first goal was huge right before halftime because we had struggled a little right before the goal happened," said Church. "She was able to get a ball over top and finished it well. She played very, very well tonight."
With a 1-0 advantage at the end of the first half, the Blue Devils held a commanding 8-3 shot advantage over the Demon Deacons.
Duke came out in the second half with the same fire and was able to add another goal on the board as McCluskey ran down the left side and found junior Carolyn Riggs in the middle of the box off a perfect cross. Riggs, a product of Indianapolis, Ind., then blasted a 15-yard shot into the left corner of the net to give the Blue Devils a 2-0 lead a the 56:33 mark. The goal for Riggs was her sixth of the season and it marks the second straight contest she has scored.
The Blue Devils kept applying the pressure on the offensive end of the field and was able to land their third goal of the game off a Duke corner kick. Junior Shelly Marshall sent a ball in to freshman Lorraine Quinn, who nailed a shot off the crossbar, and sophomore Darby Kroyer corralled the rebound and tallied her fifth goal of the season.
In goal for the Blue Devils on the night was freshman Allison Lipsher, who notched her seventh shutout of the season, in the first postseason came of her career. Lipsher finished with two saves on the evening. As a team, Duke now owns 11 shutouts on the year and is two shy of tying a Duke school record of 13.
"Allison played a good game in goal for us," said Church. "She showed a good presence and showed that she was in control behind us. Our overall back four played really well tonight. We played a lot of people in the second and each of them played really well. They stepped up their level of play from the first half.""
For the game, Duke outshot Wake Forest 14-3 and held a 6-0 corner kick advantage. McCluskey also registered her league-leading ninth game-winning goal of the season on the night.
"We had a great game against North Carolina on Oct. 28 and are just looking forward to another great game," said Church. "We are always excited about playing North Carolina."
