CHAPEL HILL, N.C.- The top-ranked North Carolina women's soccer team collected a goal in the 63rd minute to defeat the 15th-ranked Duke Blue Devils, 2-1, on Thursday evening at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill, N.C. Duke falls to 12-6, 5-4 in the ACC, while North Carolina improves to 16-0, 9-0.
"We played hard and did some nice things tonight," said Duke Head Coach Robbie Church. "We got beat tonight on a world class goal. She [Jamie Gilbert] turned--had a little bit of an angle--our defender did a great job and she [Gilbert] hit it really well."
The Tar Heels got on the board less than four minutes into the match as Kacey White sent the ball down the right side of the field to Gilbert, who found Anne Morrell for her fourth goal of the season. Morrell found herself wide open in front of the net and was able to put the hit the right corner of the net past Blue Devil freshman goalkeeper, Allison Lipsher.
Duke wasted no time trying to get into the scoring column itself as senior Casey McCluskey made a run at the left side of the goal, which led to a Blue Devil corner kick. Sophomore Rebecca Moros sent the ball in the far right side of the goal where junior Heidi Hollenbeck sent a shot just high over the crossbar at the 7:11 mark.
The Blue Devils tried to get more offense going in the first half but the referees continuously called Duke for offsides and finished the first 45 minutes with seven offsides to only two for the Tar Heels. North Carolina had a couple of chances towards the end of the first half but Lipsher made a two stops to keep the score at 1-0 in favor of UNC.
After a motivating half-time speech from Church, the Blue Devils came out in the first five minutes of action earning two corner kicks. Off the second corner kick, junior Carolyn Ford was able to find a streaking junior Carolyn Riggs, who beat the Tar Heel defenders and caught North Carolina goalkeeper Aly Winget out of the box. Riggs, a native of Indianapolis, Ind., settled the ball and hit her fifth goal of the season to even the score against the nation's top-ranked team.
"Carolyn did a good job of holding off the defender, spinning herself around and did a great job of finishing," said Church. "It was our first quality opportunity and we were able to finish it."
Then, in the 63rd minute North Carolina began firing shots of its own as Lori Chalupney blasted a left-footed shot that hit the crossbar and bounced back onto the box. The Tar Heels came back 24 seconds later as Gilbert nailed a 25-yard rocket that hit the tip of Lipsher's fingertips and went in the tip right of the net to give North Carolina a 2-1 lead.
The Tar Heels almost increased its lead on three different occasions from the 80-85 minute marks as Kacey White, Morrell and Gilbert had key shots, but could not get it in the net. Duke had a chance of its own in the 85th minute as Riggs had a shot that was saved by Winget on the right side of the goal.
In goal for the Blue Devils, Lipsher finished with four saves on the night, while Winget had one save for the Tar Heels. North Carolina finished with a 15-5 shot advantage for the game.
The Tar Heels also receive one point towards the Carlyle Cup, which is a year-long competition between Duke and North Carolina. The Tar Heels now lead 2.5-1.0 in the standings.
Duke will next play in the ACC Tournament on Nov. 3 in Cary, N.C.
