Duke University women's lacrosse head coach Kerstin Kimel recently announced the hiring of Christine Mastro as an assistant coach with the program. Mastro will work primary with the offense as well as overseeing team fitness.
"We are extremely excited to have someone with Chris's experience and background as a member of our staff," said Kimel. "She has an outstanding reputation as a coach and motivator and I am confident that she will be a valuable asset to our program as we continue to strive for excellence in pursuit of an ACC and National Championship."
Mastro spent last season as an assistant coach at her alma mater Virginia Tech. She returned to Virginia Tech after serving as an assistant at Brown University for two seasons. Her responsibilities at Brown included recruiting, travel coordinating and assisting with practice planning. In addition, her on-field coaching duties focused primarily on the attack.
A native of Latham, N.Y., Mastro graduated from Virginia Tech in 1999 with a degree in health and physical education. Mastro, a four-year letterwinner in lacrosse, was a starter on the squad that won the Atlantic-10 Championship in 1999. In addition, she received the Coach's Award her senior year.
Prior to coaching at Brown, Mastro worked at Cave Spring High School in Roanoke, Va. There she served as the assistant varsity tennis coach in 1999 and the head varsity swim coach from 1999-2000. Mastro was also a substitute teacher at Cave Spring.
Mastro has also coached at numerous lacrosse camps across the country and served as assistant director at the Brown Lacrosse Camp in 2001-2002. She has also performed volunteer work with the Special Olympics and American Cancer Society.
