The Duke University women's lacrosse team, 13-4 on the season and ranked fourth in the latest IWLCA poll, received one of 16 bids to the 2003 NCAA Division I Women's Lacrosse Championship on Sunday, May 4. The Blue Devils have now reached the tournament in six consecutive season and have advanced past the opening round in each of the past four seasons.
Duke, the four-seed, will host 13th-seeded Ohio State in the opening round at Koskinen Stadium on Thursday, May 8. The winner of the Duke-Ohio State contest advances on to play the winner of the (5)Princeton-(12)Le Moyne contest. The highest remaining seed hosts the second round game as well.
"We are happy to be the fourth-seed and be playing at home," said head coach Kerstin Kimel. "Ohio State is a great team and we are looking forward to a tough game on Thursday."
The Blue Devils are 7-1 at home this season with the lone loss coming on Sunday to eighth-ranked Dartmouth. Duke has hosted NCAA Tournament games the last four years, holding a 4-1 record at Koskinen Stadium in tournament action.
Ohio State, 13-3 on the season, earned an automatic bid by claiming the American Lacrosse Conference championship. Thursday's contest between the two school will mark their first ever meeting in women's lacrosse.
