WEST LAFAYETTE, IND. - With the much better weather conditions on Thursday, the Duke women's golf team fired the third-best round of 294, but still trail Southern California by 25 strokes heading into the final round of the NCAA Championship at the Par-72, 6,300-Yard Kampen Golf Course in West Lafayette, Ind.
Duke owns a three-day total of 926, but Southern California continued their stellar play and own a team-best 901 followed by Pepperdine (908), Oklahoma State (912), Texas (917), Florida (918), Auburn (920), Ohio State (921), UCLA (924), Duke (926) and Arizona (927) in the top 10. The Blue Devils will tee off the 10th hole beginning at 1:20 p.m. on Friday along with Ohio State and UCLA.
For the second straight day, freshman Liz Janangelo led Duke's scoring with an even-par 72 and now is tied 25th in the individual competition with a three-day total of 230. Janangelo, a West Hartford, Conn., product, started her day off with three straight bogeys before turning in four birdies over the next 15 holes to finish strong.
The reigning NCAA Champion, Virada Nirapathpongporn, had a roller coaster round as early on she was two-under-par before suffering a bogey on hole eight, quadruple bogey on nine and a double-bogey on 13. But the Bangkok, Thailand native battled back to birdies holes 15, 16 and 17 to finish with a 74. Nirapathpongporn is tied fifth with a 225 and is five strokes out of the individual lead.
Both Leigh Anne Hardin and Niloufar Aazam-Zanganeh turned in rounds of 74 on Thursday. Hardin also struggled early on suffering bogeys on three of the first five holes, but settled down after that to register one birdie on hole 16 and now owns a three-day total of 238. Aazam-Zanganeh made the turn four-over-par but fired a 34 on the final nine holes to card a 74 and is tied 48th with a 233. Senior Kristina Engstrom struggled for the third day in a row with an 83.
Overall, Duke's four counting scorers of Nirapathpongporn, Janangelo, Aazam-Zanganeh and Hardin finished the final nine holes five-under-par. Leading the individual competition are Mikaela Parmlid of Southern California and Andrea Vander Lende of Florida with a four-over-par score of 220.
