Four Duke University women's lacrosse players were named to the 2003 Brine IWLCA/US Lacrosse All-South Region team as announced today by Duke head coach Kerstin Kimel, chair of the IWLCA Division I All-America committee. Senior Kate Kaiser and junior Meghan Miller received first team accolades, while Lauren Gallagher and freshman Katie Chrest were named to the second team.
Kaiser, also an All-ACC pick, collected first team all-region honors for the fourth time in her career, becoming the first Duke women's lacrosse player to accomplish that feat. The senior midfielder ranked among the Blue Devils team leaders in goals (38), points (44), caused turnovers (37), ground balls (49) and draw controls (29). The Cockeysville, Md., native finished her career ranked second all-time at Duke with 154 goals and third in career points with 174.
Miller earned All-South Region honors for the first time in her career. She displayed her versatility throughout the season collecting 11 goals and five assists, while leading the team in caused turnovers (42) and ground balls (61).
Gallagher, a three-time All-ACC pick, was selected to the all-region team for the third time in her career. She ranked second on the team with 51 points (37 goals and 14 assists) this season and closed her career second in the record books with 193 career points. The West Chester, Pa., native is also a two-time All-America.
Chrest registered one of the best freshman seasons in Duke history with 39 goals, 15 assists and 54 points to lead Duke in all three categories. Her goal and point totals set Duke freshman records with her 15 assists falling just one shy of the school record. Chrest also became the third Duke player to be named ACC Rookie of the Year, joining teammates Kate Kaiser (1999) and Meghan Miller (2001) on the list.
