GAINESVILLE, FLA. - Duke University sophomore Amanda Johnson advanced to the third round of the NCAA Singles Championship, while the Blue Devil tandem of Kelly McCain and Hillary Adams registered a straight set victory in the NCAA Doubles Championship on Tuesday at the Ring Tennis Complex in Gainesville, Fla.
Johnson, ranked 19th nationally, came back from losing the first set to 79th-ranked Megan Bradley from Miami, 2-6, and won the next two sets, 6-4, 7-6, to advance to the next round. A Bettendorf, Iowa product, Johnson will next battle top-ranked and No. 1 seed Villmarie Castellvi of Tennessee. Castellvi defeated 29th-ranked Maja Mlakar of Arizona, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0, on Tuesday.
In doubles action, the 14th-ranked duo of McCain and Adams defeated 36th-ranked Linda Faltynkova and Katarzyna Kolodynska of Oklahoma State, 6-2, 6-4, and will next take on California's Christina Fusano and Raquel Kops-Jones on Wednesday. Earlier this season, Duke's team fell 8-5 to Fusano/Kops-Jones on Feb. 8.
Duke's eighth-ranked doubles team of Johnson and senior Julie DeRoo fell 6-3, 6-4 to Miami's Melissa Applebaum and Bradley. The duo conclude the season with a 27-11 mark.
