WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Duke women's tennis team had an easy time with Wake Forest on Wednesday as the fifth-ranked Blue Devils blanked the Demon Deacons, 7-0, in Winston-Salem, N.C. Duke improves to 21-2 overall and 6-0 in ACC action.
Duke kicked off the doubles action by taking the 1-0 advantage as 60th-ranked Katie Granson/Julia Smith downed Karin Coetzee/Sandie Knight (8-6) at the second slot and won at No. 3 due to a default. At the first slot, Duke's 10th-ranked tandem of Kelly McCain/Hillary Adams was upset by Katie Martzolf/Danielle Schwartz (8-4).
In singles action, Duke had no problem with Wake Forest as the Blue Devils won all six singles matches to take the 7-0 victory. Duke's 98th-ranked Julie DeRoo got things started with a quick 6-0, 6-2 victory over Elizabeth Proctor and then third-ranked McCain blanked Coetzee (6-0, 6-0) at the No. 3 and No. 1 positions. Then, 60th-ranked Katie Blaszak knocked off Schwartz (6-1, 6-0) at No. 5, 18th-ranked Amanda Johnson downed Martzolf (6-2, 6-4) at No. 2 and Adams notched a 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 victory over Knight. The final point was won by the Blue Devils due to a default by the Demon Deacons.
Duke will next travel to Clemson on Saturday and Georgia Tech on Sunday to close out the regular season. The Clemson match will begin at 1:30 PM and Georgia Tech at 1:00 PM.
