CLEMSON, SC - The 17th-ranked Clemson women's tennis team lost to fifth-ranked Duke by a score of 4-3 on Saturday afternoon in Clemson. The Tigers posted upsets at flights one and two doubles and flights two and three singles in the loss to the Blue Devils. With the loss, Clemson falls to 16-4 overall and 6-1 in the ACC, while Duke improves to 22-2 and 7-0 in conference play. Duke is now 149-2 against ACC opponents dating back to 1989.
Clemson won the doubles point after defeating top-10 ranked Blue Devil teams at flights one and two. The Tigers' 27th-ranked team of Julie Coin and Laurence Jayet won an 8-3 decision over Duke's 10th-ranked Hillary Adams and Kelly McCain at flight one. At two doubles, Clemson's #48 team of Daniela Alvarez and Alix Lacelarie defeated the sixth-ranked doubles team in the country, Julie DeRoo and Amanda Johnson of Duke, by a score of 8-2 to remain undefeated (14-0) in matches at flight two doubles. The Tigers' Anna Dolinska and Richele LeSaldo dropped their flight three doubles match to #60 Katie Granson and Julia Smith, 8-6.
In singles action, Clemson's 19th-ranked and top-seeded Coin fell to third-ranked McCain by a score of 6-4, 6-4, ending Coin's 11-match winning streak dating back to Feb. 28. The Tigers' #106 Lacelarie upset 18th-ranked Johnson of Duke, 6-3, 7-5 at number two singles. Clemson's Alvarez posted an upset at flight three singles, defeating #49 Saras Arasu by a score of 6-3, 6-1. The Tigers' Ioana Paun dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision to #98 DeRoo at flight four, while Jayet fell to #60 Katie Blaszak by a score of 6-2, 6-4 at five singles. Clemson's Dolinska was defeated by #115 Granson, 6-0, 6-0 at flight six singles.
Duke will next travel to Georgia Tech on Sunday at 1:00 PM to close out the regular season.
