The Duke University women's lacrosse improved to 10-2 overall and 2-1 in the ACC with a 12-7 win over fourth-ranked Virginia in Charlottesville on Sunday. Seniors Lauren Gallagher (West Chester, Pa.) and Kate Kaiser (Cockeysville, Md.) paced the Blue Devil offensive attack by combining to score nine of the team's 12 goals, while freshman goalie Megan Huether (Lutherville, Md.) had an outstanding day stopping 15 Cavalier shots.
Duke won the opening draw and got the ball to Kaiser, who challenged from the top of the fan and drove in for the opening goal 36 seconds into the game. Virginia answered right away as Tiffany Schummer won the next draw and on the reset, fed the ball to Cary Chasney, who raced in for the score 22 seconds later, tying the game 58 seconds into the contest.
The Blue Devils then scored the next seven goals, starting with a pair from Kaiser who scored twice in a span of 89 seconds to put Duke ahead 3-1. Gallagher extended the margin to 5-1 with free position goals at the 7:38 and 8:54 marks.
Senior Jessica Bennett (Gladstone, N.J.) added a goal with 10:10 gone by in the half and Kaiser collected her fourth of the game less than two minutes later, to help Duke take an 7-1 lead 11:58 into the game. The lead grew to 8-1 when Gallagher netted her third goal at the 23:33 mark.
Chasney collected her second goal of the day with less than six minutes left in the half to create an 8-2 halftime score. Freshman Katie Chrest (Hampstead, Md.), Duke's leading goal scorer, and Kaiser were both assessed red cards in the opening half, forcing the Blue Devils to play the final forty minutes without two of their top goal scorers.
Despite the absence of Chrest and Kaiser, Duke pushed the margin to 9-2 when Corrine Broesler (Babylon, N.Y.) scored a free position goal 4:41 into the second stanza. Virginia's Morgan Thalenberg and Amy Appelt registered goals less than a minute apart to close the gap to 9-4, but Meghan Miller's (Severna Park, Md.) goal at 41:35 gave Duke a six-goal cushion.
Lauren Aumiller scored off an Appelt pass at 50:10, but the Blue Devils quickly responded as Gallagher beat the Virginia goalie at 54:10 and 56:34 for her fourth and fifth goals of the game and a 12-5 Duke lead. The Cavaliers added an Aumiller goal at 58:53 and an empty net goal as time ran out by Tyler Leachman for the 12-7 final.
Junior Meghan Walters (Wyndmoor, Pa.) picked up a game-high eight ground balls while also causing two turnovers for the Blue Devils. For the game, Duke collected 29 ground balls, while scoring 12 times on 26 shots (.462 percent).
Duke returns to action on Friday, April 11 when it returns home to face #15 Notre Dame at 4:00 p.m.
