The Duke University women's lacrosse team improved to 13-3 on the season with a 21-6 win over Davidson on Saturday at Koskinen Stadium. Senior Erin O"Shaughnessy paced the scoring attack with four goals and an assist as the Blue Devils recorded the second highest scoring total in school history. During the 2001 season, Duke topped Vanderbilt 22-2.
Duke started strong scoring the first seven goals of the contest, as Kate Kaiser collected a pair of goals during the opening 14 minutes of play. Meghan Miller and Jessica Bennett each collected a goal and an assist during the surge with five other Blue Devils registering at least one point.
Davidson's Eloise Grose scored with 15:51 gone by to make the score 7-1, but Duke responded with four straight goals over the next 10 minutes. Lauren Gallagher, Katie Chrest, Miller and O'Shaughnessy registered the goals with O'Shaughnessy and Bennett adding assists.
After a Wildcat goal by Becca McDevitt, sophomore Kristy Dirks scored off a Stefanie Sparks pass with just over a minute left before the half to put the Blue Devils ahead 12-2. Duke out shot the visitors 21-4 in the opening thirty minutes with Davidson also turning the ball over 17 times.
Kaiser took the opening draw of the second half and went straight to goal, collecting her third goal of the day and 34th of the season. Davidson's Kiften Stephens collected a goal just under five minutes later to create a 13-3 margin.
The Blue Devils then ripped off six straight goals, including three by O'Shaughnessy and a pair from Lauren Kickham, to take a 19-3 lead. Whitney Diefendorf scored off a Millie McKeachie pass with 7:41 remaining in the game for Davidson.
Duke countered with goals from Andrea Crosby, the first of her college career, and Carrie Starr to advance the lead to 21-4. The Wildcats got a pair of goals from Loren Seaton in the final five minutes to create the 21-6 final.
For the game, 13 different Blue Devils collected goals while eight different players added assists. Duke held a decisive shot advantage of 34-9 and capitalized on 27 Davidson turnovers. In addition, the Blue Devils collected 36 ground balls with five players brining in three ground balls apiece.
Duke returns to action on Sunday, May 4 at 12:00 p.m. when it hosts Dartmouth. Sunday's game marks the final regular season home contest for senior Kate Kaiser, Lauren Gallagher, Erin O'Shaughnessy, Jessica Bennett, Meg Barnet and Carrie Starr.
