Senior Lauren Gallagher erupted for four goals and two assists to lead the Duke University women's lacrosse team to a 13-5 win over eighth-ranked James Madison on Wednesday. The Blue Devils, ranked fourth in the latest IWLCA and Inside Lacrosse polls, improved to 12-3 on the year, while JMU fell to 11-5 overall. Freshman Katie Chrest added three goal and two assists, establishing a new Duke freshman record with 47 points this season.
Senior Jessica Bennett collected the first goal of the game off a pass from Katie Laschinger 6:38 into the contest. The Blue Devils extended the margin to 2-0 at 9:56 when Kate Kaiser assisted on Gallagher's first goal of the day. The lead swelled to 4-0 over the next eight minutes with Chrest dishing out an assist to Kristy Dirks (13:39) and then scoring off a pass from Gallagher (17:32).
James Madison broke through the Duke defense for its first goal at 21:19 as Lisa Staedt collected an unassisted goal. The Dukes added a second goal at 23:57 when Jess Brownridge beat Duke goalie Megan Huether to trim the deficit to 4-2, but Gallagher added a goal just twenty seconds before intermission to give the Blue Devils a three-goal edge at the half.
Chrest opened the second stanza with a pair of goals in a little over two minutes with Gallagher and Kaiser each registering assists. The two goals pushed the freshman attack's season total to 32 goals, just five shy of breaking Kelly Dirks' freshman record of 36 goals.
James Madison got a goal from Gail Decker at 33:41 to make the score 7-3 in favor of the visitors. The Duke lead grew to 8-3, just over a minute later as Laschinger collected a goal off a Kristy Dirks' pass. Fourteen seconds later, Kaiser deposited a Laschinger pass into goal for a six goal advantage.
The Dukes received goals from Decker and Staedt at 41:06 and 47:16 to trim into the deficit but the Blue Devils responded with four unanswered goals to close the game. Gallagher scored unassisted goals at 51:39 and 53:15 to move into the team lead with 33 goals this season. The four-goal effort marks the fourth time in 2003 she has collected four or more goals in a game.
Laschinger collected her third assist of the game with 54:16 gone by, this time with Bennett earning the goal. The sophomore midfielder now has 12 assists this season and 22 in her career. Senior Erin O'Shaughnessy closed the scoring with her ninth goal of the season at the 59:16 mark as Chrest assisted on the play.
For the game, Duke out shot James Madison, 30-22, while collecting a season-high 10 assists. Huether helped thwart the JMU attack with nine saves in goal for the Blue Devils.
Duke returns to action on Saturday, April 26 when it hosts Davidson at 12:00 p.m.
