The Duke University women's lacrosse team dropped to 11-3 on the year with a 12-9 loss to third-seed Virginia on Friday in the opening round of the 2003 ACC Championship. Senior Lauren Gallagher paced the Blue Devils with four goals, while Kate Kaiser added a goal and two assists, but the Blue Devils were unable to overcome a slow start.
Virginia's Cary Chasney opened the scoring with a goal 3:29 into the game gave the Cavaliers an early 1-0 lead. Just under two minutes later Amy Appelt put Virginia up 2-0 with a free position. The Cavaliers stretched the lead to 3-0 on another free position goal this time with Morgan Thalenberg beating Duke goalie Megan Huether. The advantage ballooned to 4-0 on a Kim Connors' goal at 9:18.
After a time-out, Duke erupted for a pair of goals in 26 seconds with freshman Katie Chrest converting a free position shot from the center hash for Duke first goal. Meghan Walters won the ensuing draw for Duke and Katie Laschinger fed Lauren Gallagher on an opposite post feed from behind the goal. Gallagher converted, making the score 4-2, 10:39 into the contest.
Chasney scored off a Lauren Aumiller pass to put Virginia back up by three at 16:53. Chasney won the ensuing draw and Virginia worked the ball around in the offensive zone before Caitlin Banks challenged from the top and scored, giving Virginia a 6-2 lead with 10:20 to play in the half.
Meghan Miller won the opening draw of the second half and Duke quickly advanced up field where Kate Kaiser fed Gallagher, who was cutting to the cage. Gallagher's goal 28 seconds into the second half pulled Duke to within three at 6-3.
The Cavaliers answered right back as Appelt scored 46 seconds after Gallagher to move the margin back to four. Aumiller converted a goal with 41:16 gone by to put Virginia up 8-3 and Appelt added a goal with 15:52 left in the contest for a six goal advantage.
Duke countered the Virginia run with a pair of goals in the less than a minute as Erin O'Shaughnessy scored from a wide angle on the left side and Kaiser won the ensuing draw and scored Duke's fifth goal to narrow the gap to 9-5.
The two teams traded goals in the next three minutes with Katie Laschinger registering the Duke tally off a pass from Chrest before Virginia collected a pair of goal after the Laschinger tally to seal the game.
Duke made a late charge with three goals in a span of 96 seconds as Gallagher sandwiched a pair of goals around a scoring shot from senior Meg Barnet, but it wasn't enough as Virginia held on for the 12-9 victory.
Duke returns to action on Wednesday, April 23 when it takes on James Madison at 6:00 p.m.
