Duke freshman Katie Chrest was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Year, while Kate Kaiser, Lauren Gallagher and Meghan Walters received all-conference recognition as voted on by the league's four head coaches and released by conference officials on Thursday night.
Chrest is having one of the best freshman seasons in Duke history with 28 goals, 12 assists and 40 points. Her goal total is already tied for the second-highest freshman total in Duke history with her 40 points ranking third all-time among Blue Devil freshman. For the season, she has nine multi-goal games with four games with two or more assists. Chrest is the third Duke player to be named ACC Rookie of the Year, joining teammates Kate Kaiser (1999) and Meghan Miller (2001) on the list.
Kaiser, a Tewaaraton Award candidate, returned after missing last season with an injury to collect All-ACC honors for the third time in her career. The senior midfielder leads the Blue Devils with 29 goals, while also ranking among team leaders in caused turnovers (29), ground balls (34) and draw controls (20). The Cockeysville, Md. native is also just 16 goals shy of matching Tricia Martin's record of 161 career goals.
Gallagher, also a three-time All-ACC pick, ranks second on the team with 35 points (25 goals and 10 assists). She collected eight goals and two assists in three conference contests, while also registering 14 goals and six assists against nationally ranked opponents.
Walters, who also missed the 2002 season with an injury, collects All-ACC honors for the second time in her career. The junior defender has helped anchor a Duke defense which ranks first in the ACC and second nationally in goals allowed per game (6.46). Individually, she ranks among the conference leaders in ground balls (fifth), caused turnovers (sixth) and draw controls (eighth).
Duke, ranked third in the latest IWLCA poll, faces fourth-ranked Virginia on Friday, April 18 at 3:30 p.m. in the opening round of the ACC Tournament. The winner of the contest faces the winner between top-seed Maryland and fourth-seed North Carolina.
