The Duke University women's lacrosse team travels to Charlottesville, Va. this weekend to compete in the 2003 ACC Tournament. The Blue Devils, 11-2 on the season and seeded second, face third-seed Virginia, 11-3 overall, on Friday, April 18 at 3:30 p.m.
The Blue Devils are 1-6 all-time in the ACC Tournament with the lone win coming in 2001 when Duke topped North Carolina, 10-5. Two times Duke and Virginia have met in the opening round, with the Cavaliers posting a 13-3 win in 1998 and a narrow 10-9 decision in 1999. The Blue Devils are 0-2 against Maryland with a loss in the ACC championship game in 2001 and 1-2 versus crosstown rival North Carolina.
The Blue Devils In The Polls: Duke currently ranks third in the latest IWLCA poll, while also ranking third in the Warrior/Inside Lacrosse Power Poll. The Blue Devils are 7-2 versus nationally ranked opponents in 2003 and 31-20 against the top-20 since the 2000 season.
Against The ACC In 2003: The Blue Devils went 2-1 in ACC action this season with wins over North Carolina and Virginia. Lauren Gallagher has a team best 10 points (8 goals, two assists) in ACC play, while fellow senior Kate Kaiser has added eight goals, seven ground balls and six caused turnovers in the three contests.
vs. Maryland Duke dropped its first conference contest, 9-8, in overtime to then fourth-ranked Maryland. Katie Chrest notched three goals in the loss, while Lauren Gallagher added one goal and two assists. The Blue Devils out shot the host Terrapins 29-20 in the game, but had just a .276 shooting percentage.
vs. North Carolina Against the ninth-ranked Tar Heels, Duke registered a .542 shooting percentage as a team in a 13-7 home victory. Kaiser paced the team with four goals, while Jessica Bennett added a hat trick. Gallagher also chipped in two goals with Chrest added two goals and two assists.
vs. Virginia Gallagher guided the team to a 12-7 road win over then fourth-ranked Virginia with a five-goal effort. Kaiser added four goals despite missing the final 37 minutes after receiving a second yellow card. Goalie Megan Huether posted 15 saves, holding the Virginia offense to just seven goals, including two goals that were scored in the final minute of play.
High-Scoring Offense: The Duke offensive attack has been potent all year ranking ninth nationally at 12.08 goals per game. In 13 contests, Duke has registering 10 or more goals on all but three occasions. Four Blue Devils have over 20 goals this season with Kaiser pacing the team with 29 goals. Chrest (28), Gallagher (25) and Jessica Bennett (21) have combined with Kaiser to score 103 of the team's 157 goals this season. Chrest leads the way in assists with 12, while Gallagher has added 10 and Katie Laschinger has collected eight assists.
Duke Defense: The Blue Devils have the top-ranked defense in the ACC and the fourth best goal against average nationally, allowing just 6.46 goals per game. The defense features a mix of skilled veterans in Meghan Walters, Caline McHenry and Cheryl Lynn Horton and talented underclassmen (Meghan Huether and Stefanie Sparks).
Other Notables: Junior Corinne Broesler has six of her nine goals in Duke's last four games ... Kristy Dirks has a team best .619 shooting percentage (13-of-21) ... Duke has caused 187 turnovers, 58 more than the opposition has forced ... the Blue Devils have had 10 different players record multi-goal games in 2003 ... Bennett has four-games with three goals ... 10 players have started all 13 games for Duke ... Huether has registered 98 saves with a .541 save percentage, while playing all but 10 minutes this season. The young goalie is second in the ACC in goals against average and save percentage, while also moving into seventh place in single season saves at Duke.
