The Duke University women's lacrosse improved to 11-2 with a 10-7 win over 15th-ranked Notre Dame on Friday. Senior Kate Kaiser (Cockeysville, Md.) delivered an outstanding effort on both ends of the field, registering three goals on three shots, six caused turnovers and six ground balls.
Kaiser won the opening draw and scored 35 seconds later to spot the Blue Devils to a 1-0 lead. It was the second game in a row that Kaiser has scored off the opening draw. Duke added to the lead at the 23:41 mark as Meghan Miller (Severna Park, Md.) scored off a Katie Laschinger (Lutherville, Md.) pass.
Senior Lauren Gallagher (West Chester, Pa.) collected her 25th goal of the season on a free position shot with seven minutes gone by in the opening half for the 3-0 Duke lead. Notre Dame's Lauren Fischer scored 42 seconds later off a Meredith Simon pass to trim the deficit to two goals.
Another senior, Jessica Bennett (Gladstone, N.J.), added at goal with 17:14 left in the half and Kaiser tallied her second marks at 13:35 to give the Blue Devils a 5-1 advantage. Fischer assisted on a Notre Dame goal by Anne Riley at 13:35 to once again cut into the Duke lead.
Two sophomores hooked up for the Blue Devils' next goal as Laschinger found Kristy Dirks (Annapolis, Md.) cutting to the goal to push the margin back to four goals at 6-2 with just over seven minutes remaining before the half. The Fighting Irish got a late goal from Danielle Shearer to go into halftime trailing 6-3.
Kaiser collected her third goal of the day and her team leading 29th of the season just 1:06 into the second half to again put the home team ahead by four goals. Notre Dame responded with back-to-back goals at 37:54 by Abby Owen and 39:13 by Crysti Foote to cut into the Duke lead. Kristen Gaudreau assisted on the second goal as the Fighting Irish pulled to within 7-5 with just over 20 minutes left in the contest.
Junior Corinne Broesler (Babylon, N.Y.) sandwiched a pair of goals around a Simon goal for Notre Dame to help the Blue Devils withstand the Fighting Irish charge. Broesler's free position goal with 13:13 remaining put Duke ahead 9-6.
Simon scored her second goal of the day with 6:40 left to play on an assist by Foote, but Notre Dame could not get any closer as Miller sealed the victory for Duke with her second goal of the day with 41 seconds remaining. Goalie Megan Huether (Lutherville, Md.) picked up a ground ball in the final ten seconds and held on as time ticked off in the 10-7 Blue Devil win.
For the game, Duke out shot the visitors 27-14 while also coming up with 18 caused turnovers. Bennett added 10 ground balls to her goal as the Blue Devils held a 42-24 advantage in the ground ball category.
Duke returns to action on Friday, April 18 when it takes on #4 Virginia in the opening round of the ACC Tournament.
